Hey guys,
Just purchased a Penn Squall Star Drag SQL 15 reel, spooled it up and ready to start practicing. I have been looking for any tutorials on adjusting the drag system and can't find anything at all. The application for the reel is straight up shark surf fishing and looking to get maximum distance out of it. Does anyone have a tutorial or notes on how to effectively set the drag for this type of fishing? Also, I noticed, straight out of the box, in free spool, it only spends like 5 seconds and not the 1+ minute that you see people showing on YouTube videos. NOTE: The last thing I want to do is go out and blow it up on the first cast, LOL!
Thanks,

Also, I noticed, straight out of the box, in free spool, it only spends like 5 seconds and not the 1+ minute that you see people showing on YouTube videos. I assume you mean "spins"? Look at the right sideplate. The golden knob that says "PENN" on it is your spool tension adjustment. Turn it slightly counterclockwise to reduce the spool tension - try about 1/4 turn at a time until you hit just the right level. If you loosen it too much, the spool will have excessive side-to-side play and your line can get caught in the sideplate. As far as drag setting goes, spool it up and mount it on the rod you'll use. Tie the end of the line to something solid, like your truck's bumper hitch, then slowly back away. Tighten the drag down slowly until you're at the maximum pressure you want applied. For shark fishing, you can have your drag buckled down pretty tight.

A good place to start on the spool tension is set it to where the spool just barely has side to side play by using your thumb to wiggle it. In other words, tighten it up where there is no play and then as you wiggle the spool side to side, loosen it until you get just a tiny bit of play in it. You never want to loosen it more than this, this would be your starting point, take it out and try casting it a short distance to see if you want it any tighter.

Thank y'all for the help. I was thinking I was going to have to take the reel apart and play with the magnets. Not hitting the gulf until September, but want to start practicing with the configuration before we get there.
