Last night for the first time in 24 years we had an incident where my neighbor had stuff taken from his truck (high dollar plumbing tools and electronics).I was shocked but then really....knew it was eventually coming. Things have changed pretty dramatically in Sachse!

I will be putting in surveillance inside and outside my home...we had already planned on doing that. We will now move into a different level of priority for this project!

Anyone know professionals in this area?

Did you do yours on your own? Is it reliable? We have a cheap wifi inside system that is sketchy to me...if I am going to do this I want it right.

Input is appreciated for sure guys!

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

I bought the 4 cam Arlo system a few weeks ago, so far we like them, only downside is if you set the motion detection which we do when not home it really drains the battery, so get the rechargeable batteries if you go this route

I plan on setting up my own external surveillance system once the new house is finished in November. Since it is under construction I am having the electrician install outlets under the eaves at the four corners of the house, back patio door and front entryway for cameras. I am also having Ethernet cables run to each of those locations so I do not have to depend on wireless signals plus I would have the option of powering the cameras using Power Over Ethernet (PoE).

I have not identified the cameras I will installing but I do know I am going to use top of the line cameras with enough resolution to be able to identify people if needed. I also plan on having any videos made for alarm events stored off-site in case the crooks try to steal/destroy the recording equipment.

I'll be interested in knowing what cameras/system you go with.

Yes, hardwired is much better, that option wasn't readily available under our circumstance

Swann is the system I have. Wired 1080 cameras. It has served me well for going on 5 years now. It captured two goons stealing a Package off my front entry. (a dobro guitar). I made a video of the incident and Ch4 News crew wanted to use it and Rowlett PD caught the perps. So the system paid for itself with that one incident. The technology is even better today. I used Hardwired cameras, that was the hard part, the little woman and I almost went to fist city over it, because she was "helping" me. It has run non stop for 5 years, no issues. 2TB hard drive keeps on recording. SAMS, Costco, have the best deals. I did not put the DVR on the network as its own server, prone to hacking. For a Security System I can recommend Green Electronics Solutions in Rowlett. They did some nice work for me on that. Sachse ain't a bad town. I like it, we go to church there. It is a stones throw from me here in Liquor City, aka Rowlett.

I have a Lorex system that I bought directly from their website. The cameras are hard wired - I ran all the cables myself and it was very much a pain in the *#(! but I'm very glad I went with a hard wired system. The cables are all run to the box supplied by Lorex and it can hold about 7 days worth of video - it just overwrites itself when it's full.

I can monitor the cameras and play back the cameras from any computer in the house. I think it can be set up for remote viewing and notifications but I haven't done that yet.

If you do it yourself my advice is to pick the easiest cable run first, hook up the camera and see what the field of view looks like. That'll help you aim the others - mine swivel pretty easily but I changes position of a couple of the cameras because I didn't like how much a tree or bush was blocking the view.

Daytime vision is very good - nighttime could be better but I don't have anything to compare it to. This may be the best you can expect in the price range I was willing to be in.

I have Arlo Pro. The cameras are rechargeable and the most active one on my driveway lasts several weeks with well over a thousand videos. It records every time some drives down the alley. One that I have on the front door will last 2-3 months before recharging is needed.
RedRanger speaks week of a hardwired system that he bought at Costco I believe, but don't remember the brand. Maybe he'll chime in.
By the way, your just down the road from me and I heard that some vehicles here in Wylie were burglarized last night. Some had a black Chrysler 300 on video with the guy getting out of it and checking car door handles to see if they were locked.

Lorex 6 camera system here....And it caught a neighbor stealing from us this Spring.

Grainy only because I took a pic from my phone on computer. Clear as day and you can zoom in. The system was $699 and my buddy installed it for $300. It is legit.

The thing to consider for the quality of recording would be whether is would be admissible in court. I not only want the thieves arrested I also want a conviction.

We went with LUMA. The system is capable of 9 cameras in HD. It keeps up to 2mo in memory if I remember correctly. The best part is I can view live from my phone at any time while Im home or away.

We were on vacation last week. I checked the camera and let my neighbor know that we had a package at the front door. He ran over and put it in the house.

I have Lorex as well, They are hardwired.

I have 6 cameras outside and 4 cameras inside. I paid a AV guy to wire my house and run all the cables in the walls. I also had him so I can watch my camera on my TV as well.

I have two set of Lorex and upgraded about 3 years ago to get HD

I wouldn't have a house without camera now of days.

I am about to upgrade our system. I have a QSee system and I am not happy with it. The pictures are way too grainy and I think it would be hard to identify someone. Im about to upgrade to a Swaan 4K system. Its one of their top-of-the-line systems, unfortunately I think its around $2500 and thats installing it yourself

outside: funlux hardwired with 1tb dvr. wifi access. 6 cameras outside, 2 in garage. (no monthly fee, just initial cost of purchase on Amazon).

I run a seperate camera inside the house on my simplisafe home alarm. (monthly fee for monitoring)

home alarm is backup. i get text notifications on movement detection on my outside cameras.

I can access it all from my phone, wife's phone, or any computer device with internet connection.

we have the ecobee HVAC controller for wifi access. thinking about setting my garage doors up on wifi to open as I am coming down the road. our metal building inhibits the antenna on the garage door range.

Folks got a free 2 camera Lorex wireless system when they opened a new bank account awhile back. The cameras plug into outlets under the eves, but the signal to the monitor is wireless. They didn't want it, so I took it. Installed one at the front door, one at the back. Both in plain view. It's amazing how much more careful deliver folks were when they saw the camera at the front door. roflmao

I installed lock boxes on the outlets so that the cameras couldn't be approached from the rear and unplugged.

May you be treated the way you treat other people, today and everyday!

I bought an 8 camera system from defender. Works really good. The app can be a little buggy sometimes but I like it.

This is only in Rowlett because the LEO wont take the time to write a report if he doesn't think it is worth it. Yes, I know this first hand and had it happen to me.

Yep, Libville. Liquor City. Tell me about it. Our PD keeps a low profile. So low that we never see them until after the theft occurs. Reactive is the word. I think it is because we are in Rockwall County but still in the city of Rowlett. We are like red-headed step children.

My parents as well as my grandma all have the 4K Lorex systems. Maybe not as user friendly as Ring or Arlo, but after you figure it out it's pretty impressive.

My parents gave us their Arlo system with 6 cameras. I live over a 1/4 mile off the road behind a locked gate with no close neighbors so it's nice to be able to log in and look at things. I did put one camera inside so that the wife could log on during the day and see the dogs...we had to turn the motion detection off on it - it liked to go off in the middle of the night while we were asleep in the other room; never saw anything to make it go off.

If something where to go down inside your home and the investigation reveals cameras on the inside
then you have to supply the footage. Which can and will be used against you.

it will be helpful to the documentary when they try and put the pieces of your disappearance together.

Do any of you guys that use your own surveillance cameras have a monitored system or do you have enough confidence to use it as a stand alone system.

I have a monitored system without cameras and am thinking about changing to cameras if I can cut the monitored fees.

Appreciate the help.

That is the way to go. I also suggest to have some camera placed in hard to reach areas.

Once they are hardwired, if you want to upgrade cameras it a fairly simple process

I had someone drive by around 8 am and hit a driver side mirror on a vehicle. Frisco Police reviewed the footage and found the person in the neighborhood, gave them the option to fix it or get a leaving the scene ticket.
