Hey guys,

Us Minnesotans need a little break from our long winters. My brother and I are planning a winter fishing trip down to Texas in March/April. Just trying to decide where we should go. What would be your picks for lakes during that time frame?

All of them in that order but remember that's the busiest time of the year for fork, Rayburn, Toledo. Both tournaments and recreation the weekends will be loaded. Falcon won't be as bad.

Agreed. Keep in mind Falcon will probably be post spawn by February.

Falcon is already post spawn in February? What is the best time to head down to Falcon then? Mid January?

I went to Falcon this year a few times while there was snow at home and also went to fork and a few lakes in between.. Feb and March this year.

Falcon doesnt get the crowds like the others youve mentioned, some people like the crowds to follow so they know where to fish and people to talk to for advice.

I had better luck at Falcon and some smaller lakes than Fork, though I did get my pb at fork my second time there on my 3rd cast.

I didnt get a guide at Falcon, though many many on here will tell you one is needed to fish the mexico side etc. I fished almost exclusively on the mexico side.

pm me if you want info if you want. Im from Iowa and will be going back down to falcon, or someplace. Im considering all of Jan Feb and March.

Falcon is good year-round. Some fish on that lake start spawning in December. You're never too early for spawning fish on that lake. The best time to fish Falcon is probably in March or April, at least for quality and numbers. By April you can find fish in all water depths. If you want the chance at a true giant, February or early March is your best bet. But then again, it's Falcon. I've fished there during the Summer and caught monsters in a foot of water. You never know on that lake. The only thing you're gonna have to worry about is the water level. Right now the lake is 38ft low and pretty much the only cover left in the lake is rock. 95% of the bushes and trees are out of water. Unless we get another monster rain like we did last Fall (the lake came up almost 20ft), you're looking at tough fishing unless you know the lake.

If it were me, I'd go to Sam Rayburn, unless Falcon catches a bunch of water.

Why would be it be tougher low water than for example when I was there and it was up 17 feet and miles of new shore was flooded? flt report was complaining about the high water making it tough then.

Seems like a whole lot less area to cover now vs then. The foundations of the town that were flooded were 22 feet deep when I was there.

24, Late March thru early April, I'd be on either Rayburn or Toledo. Just plan your time to be fishing during the weekdays.
Weekends, there can get crazy.

Stay in Nacogdoches and you can fish Toledo Bend, Sam Rayburn, Lake Nacogdoches, Pinkston and Lake Naconiche. If you watch MLF you will understand last couple lakes. They killed em there.

I mean, just think about it. A lake that's 38ft low isn't gonna fish great, unless you know where to go. And there aren't many places for those fish to go. When it gets this low a lot of those fish go suspend in the channel and become virtually uncatchable. You can almost forget about fishing the upper end of the lake. Not much to fish up there that's worthy. You gotta fish down South when it's this low. I should also clarify, it's bad if you're a shallow water angler. Lots of barren bank with little to no rock now. Even some of the good offshore spots are out of water.

I'd much rather fish Falcon when there's miles of cover in the water. I do better that way. Just gotta learn how to break it down and pattern fish.
