Looks like there is an early start to this years migration. In the last few days I have noticed at least 12 or more around my feeders, which is up from 4 to 6 last week.

Seems awfully early . I figured it was just a combination of the young fledging (parents have more free time) and the drought affecting flowers .

Good thing I'm stocked up on sugar .

Ive had one aggressive hummer that protects the feeder and drinks a lot of it. Its crazy watching it chase all the others off.

Last year the migration was really getting going by mid August. The birds that I am seeing now look to be mature males. They generally lead the way during the migration.

I have resident birds throughout the late spring and summer. Usually about 6. In August to the end of September I have 6-8 feeders going and have upwards of 50 birds hanging around. Then about the 1st week of October all of them head South.

Do they hang around in larger cities down there?

It seems up here you rarely see them in the cities on the flatland but just 10 miles away in the foothills theyre all over the place.

They hang out where they can find food.

Was just over at a fishing buddies house. He has 12 feeders up and this morning we guessed there were over 100 Hummingbirds feeding. Tried to take some pictures but they are too fast. Pictures do not do it justice.

Frank, we are on Bob Sandlin. Neighbor always gets a lot of the migratory Hummingbirds there. Last year he went through 40 pounds of sugar. He said this year started off faster than last.

Still have my resident 3-4 birds. By Sept. I'll have a swarm. They'll empty 3 feeders 3 times a day.

When My Dad built his retirement home , He put out some feeders. He had one
aggressive bird that ruled the feeders. He shot it. Next most dominant bird
stepped up to take it's place. My Dad said he really felt bad about it, never tried to
intervene after that.

Hummers have been falling off the past few years out our way. This year is the lowest numbers hummer summer in many years. Might see 2-3 same time out back, 5-6 out front. DW has only 2 feeders in front, 2 in back. Fills them to 1/4 mark, change every other day, maybe half the sugar water gone. If she remembers correctly (and what woman doesn't remember every little thing!) last year she had 6 in front, 4 in back and they were almost empty when she changed them. Few years ago she was filling daily, had 10-12 feeders out front and back.

Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

The migration is full on at my place. I now estimate that I have at least 80 birds all trying to hit my 8 feeders. The feeders have a combined 48 feeding stations and during the morning and evening feeding rush all are being used with dozens of others hovering around waiting their turn. This is a record year for me. The pics are not that great due to limited light, but you get the idea.

I've only seen 1 over here in Bossier and that was just in the last week. Kept my feeder full all year too wondering when they would come by. Would be stunning to see so many hummingbirds like some of you have!!

You could have well over 160 (if you are along the coast) birds coming into your feeders.

The first time we banded hummers at the house in Corpus Christi, I figure we had 20 birds coming to the feeders. 120 birds were banded in about 3 hours. Only stopped because we ran out of bands.

One time I colored marked 60+ birds and that evening only two or three colored marked birds were seen at the feeders.

At the hawk watch at a park about half a mile up the river from the house, birders would always come up saying they had just seen a hummingbird that they couldn't find in the bird book. Half the people that I told about my banding and marking the birds, gave me a look that I had fell off my rocker and had a few screws loose.

Every year during the peak, we would use one and a half gallons of sugar water a day.

Ive had around 4 regulars that were kinda bland looking with one dominant one-
Just today already have over 10 at one time and these have that green feathers look-
Some with a red throat-
Love this-

The wife and I are new to the Hummingbird thing. She saw one a few weeks ago, so we bought a feeder and put it up. Nothing so far. We've been watching but it has not attracted any. Maybe they are past Liquor City in their migration path?

Weve had 3 resident birds all summer. Over the weekend, that number has at least tripled. We have 2 feeders out, and all the drink stations are taken, with others waiting around. Watching the aerial combat has been very entertaining. Ive learned that hummingbirds are buttholes.

Yes, I was until 2006. Back then there about 500 Hummingbird banders in the U.S.A.

Has everyone else seen less activity?
I was having up to 15 birds at a time for several days and then in about two days I'm down to just maybe 3 or 4 different birds-
Not sure if I have upset them somehow or are they just migrating?
I've never had that many at once so I'm not sure how long they stay in my area.

Way less than last year.

Normally they are gone from here by the end of September.

Strange weather might have been a factor...its still in the mid 90s up here.

About half of mine have left. I still have about 40 or more birds working my feeders. I expect them to be mostly gone within a couple of weeks.

Most I ever have is 3. And I haven't seen them since last Friday. I'm sad.

Hummer feeders is the wife's thing. Says there's either a few more hummers around or the ones we've had all summer are making more feeder visits. Expects it won't be for another couple weeks before the numbers shoot way up as the migrants pass thru. They all will, hopefully, have the proper documentation with them.

I usually put a couple of feeders out around the 1st of April. The spring migration is not nearly as thick as it is in the fall. They seem to trickle north gradually. Here is a map for this spring. You can keep checking back to see the reported sightings.

1 cup of plain sugar to 4 cups of water. Mix well. No need to heat it up. A 1 to 4 ratio works well and will reduce the number of bees/wasps. Chill the left over fluid.

I use the exact recipe except I heat the water to a boil. It helps the sugar dissolve, refrigerate, then fill my feeders.

I put out a feeder a couple of days ago. No birds yet. I put mine out about a week early this year because of reported sightings in the area.

Should you use red food coloring or not?

No food coloring. Not good for the birds. If your feeder has red on it, that's all you need. Some commercial hummingbird feed has red mixed in, but it is different from food coloring and in my opinion not needed. Just mix your own and save money.

Number 9 addresses the red dye Trebor, its says it hasn't been proven it is detrimental to the birds, "but why take the chance" it says.

I had always heard that about the dye also, I had never looked it up before.

I bet its ok then.
