I use to work at a now considered small grocery store. It was common that my buddies and I would steel chit loads of beer to get lit up in hopes of getting laid. We had varying success in the getting laid part. But we had tons of alcohol. I guess maybe this should be in the sins thread. I had a friend in high that worked at a grocery store. We would get in her line and she would ring up like every third item. Eventually I think she got caught. Back then grocery stores did not sell beer in Richardson. We had to go down central to Walnut Hill. I mowed the yard next to my girl friends house and knew that they kept a stock of wine and beer in garage so I had a steady supply.

When I shop at Walmart, Im asked for my receipt every time. I ALWAYS refuse. I understand they are trying to prevent theft, but I absolutely refuse to be considered a thief until I prove my innocence by showing a receipt. They cannot hold you hostage until you produce a receipt. The purchase of products at Walmart is a simple contract. Their is an offer ( putting the items up for sale ), acceptance (agreeing to purchase the items ) and consideration ( payment for those items ). At that moment, the items you purchased are legally yours and yours alone. They have no legal right to demand to see anything in those bags, or your receipt. It is YOUR property. They can ask to see whatever they want, but you are under no obligation to show them. I always tell them 'no thank you' and keep walking. I am no thief, and I refuse to be see as one until I prove Im not.
Everyone has their own opinions, and I respect them, but as for me, I refuse to ever show my receipt.
Lastly, as far as Shopkeepers Privilege Laws. Definition from Wikipedia : Shopkeeper's privilege is a law recognized in some parts of the United States under which a shopkeeper is allowed to detain a suspected shoplifter on store property for a reasonable period of time, so long as the shopkeeper has cause to believe that the person detained in fact committed, or attempted to commit, theft of store property.[1]The privilege to detain, although recognized in many jurisdictions, is not as broad as a police officer's privilege to arrest.[2] If the shopkeeper exceeds the bounds of this privilege and makes an arrest, the lawfulness of his action will be determined by the jurisdiction's rules governing arrest by a private citizen. The shopkeeper's privilege is for the purpose of investigation only; if, after reasonable detention and investigation, the shopkeeper mistakenly concludes that the suspect is guilty and has him arrested, the shopkeeper may becomes liable for these acts just as he would have been had he committed them without undertaking a prior detention and investigation.[3] Statutes in many states have modified and in some cases broadened the common law privilege,[4] for example, by expressly permitting detention of the suspect until the police arrive.[5] In other cases, case precedent has provided shopkeepers with similar tools.[6] The practical effect of these extensions is to give the shopkeeper the same privilege as a police officer to make an arrest on reasonable grounds.[7]
So if a shopkeeper detains you for theft, he will be legally and civilly liable if no theft occured.

I should get a discount for checking out my own stuff. This. Then there would be no need for those 2 cashiers in the full checkout lines while the other 20 full checkout registers are unmanned.

They have been redoing a lot of the local neighborhood markets and they have mostly self-checkout stations. That's where I go. Much easier and a whole lot faster.

So true, at noon today the local Wal-Mart was packed, 4 registers open, very long lines, a floor manager was asking people to use self checkout, of course they were backed up as well

I had SAM club bake me a family pizza combo deal, you have to pay for it in advance before they even make the order. So I get my order and the line is freaking long to get out. I just start walking to the front and around the lady, she yells at me and I yell back that I don't have time to wait on her. She yells that I am being rude. I could care less. Do that everytime now.

Bless the senior citizens that find themselves stuck at a Walmart, instructed to watch for theft at an exit and ask for receipts. Sure, they aren't forced to do it, but home circumstances and finances may be forcing them to do "something, anything" to supplement their meager incomes. Then, they have to deal with the public who sees them as hostiles. I know, I don't like being asked for my receipt, and I can't remember the last time I was, but if I was to be asked by a sweet old lady or old man who reminds me my own senior loved ones, I'd show it kindly, and with a smile. I can't imagine with these older people must put up with by the minions of Walpunks who go through their doors. Blessings to our seniors. I love them all. ...wisdom
