Some of the smaller lakes?

They have some killer lakes up there that rarely get fished for smallies.
lake Oahe. Just north of Pierre.

Have fun, man. If it gets tough hit the smaller lakes, they can really produce numbers and size.

That's when the lake starts freezing over, in December....when were the great smallies caught?

Lakes in Tennessee freeze over in December??

Rainy Lake is in Canada, my friend...

Actually, C130 said he just got back from Tennessee and wanted to return in December, to Tennessee. My friend laugh

I catch a ton of smallmouth here in cape cod. One thing I had to learn was set the hook and reel fast because they always seem to hit it straight on and swim right at you, lose a lot of fish.

If you are fishing lakes that have muskies in them, don't throw your expensive spinnerbaits. They will leave out with them.

We just got back from Rainy Lake yesterday so I thought I'd send an update. First, smallmouth are a blast to catch. They fight extremely hard. We fished lots of baits, but really only had consistent bites with a 4" swim bait or short seinkos on wacky rig. We found them consistently in rocky area's in less than 10 FOW.

Being new to fishing up north, we also discovered northern pike. At first it was really cool catching them because they fight really hard, but pretty soon we just tried to shake them off if we hooked one. They are the most stinky and slimy fish I have ever ran into. Their teeth will also break you off a lot when you catch one.

If I get a chance to go up there again, I'm going to try to do it so I can take my bass boat. It was a rare thing to see an actual bass boat on the water. They fish out of deep v-bottom boats like the Lund. This was a challenge when you are targeting bass. When you rent a boat you aren't going to get a bass boat!

Overall, it was a great trip and I'd like to do it every year.

Glad your trip went well. Ive never been to Rainy but have read a lot about it. Lots of fish and every once in awhile you will get a good sized one. If you do bring your bass boat up, I would definitely stop at Mille Lacs. That's the place where you can legitimately catch your 4-5lbers. Summer can be tough but the spring and fall you can get on schools of them where your average is well over 4lbs.
