need to know what lakes would be good for night fishing. Been on Fork a few times but only during the day. Any other lakes good for night fishing?

You can't go wrong with Fork anytime but I have done a ton of night fishing through the years and find most lakes that I fish during the day are worth fishing at night. Back in the day especially when Fork was really crowded I started going to Bob Sandlin a lot and to me it was almost like a mini Fork. Really have had some of my best nights at that lake and is pretty easy to get around and is pretty much one of those lakes that wherever you are you can pretty much drop the trolling motor and start fishing without doing a ton of running. Monticello also was really good at night but not sure since there has been a lot of change at that lake recently. Pretty much any lake is good and even though I don't necessarily like a lake with a ton of docks and people around it I live near Cedar Creek and it has been a pretty decent lake to fish at night.

There are several long threads on here lately about night fishing. Just do a search and you will strike gold. I usually scroll down to see if Donald Harper has commented and read what he says first.

Athens or Cypress. Easy to run and lots of docks with lights on them

As a very general rule of thumb any lake that has at least 1 foot of visibility is a candidate for me to night fish. I'm sure some guys will say they catch them out of chocolate milk at night, but I tend to favor higher visibility when thinning the list down.

Anyone have tips on navigating at night or ways to make visibility better while fishing?

You need to know the area very good!!! I never explore new water at night I will just usually fish the areas where I caught them in the daytime. I like to have my GPS running on my graph for a reference to my saved boat trails. And using a handheld spotlight to just turn on for second to make sure my trail is clear but never running it consistently. MOST IMPORTANTLY is your speed!! Your not running any races at night!!! I keep it under 30mph and get to my spots just fine and save alot of gas by doing so.

Let your eyes adjust to the dark is the best thing. Know the area and any dangers in it. I rarely go above idle speed unless I know the lake and know there are no dangers. Use a soptlight sparingly. The less light you use the better you actually see at night. I frequent Fork often at night and can idle thru the mine field of stumps fairly easily in the dark. I know they are there and I am in no hurry. It is also best to plan before getting to the lake and know where you are going to fish and find the closest ramp.

RayBob is a phenomenal night fishing lake. I have fished it at night from 2000-2013 with prolly 10-15 trips every summer. I just got out of the habit in recent years. We've had some of the best fishing experiences ever during those times. We would always know the areas very well, and pretty much duplicate and simplify our methods of catching. Three baits is all we would throw, C-rig, topwater, and T-rig. We would meet around 6pm-7pm at ramp closest to where we plan to fish, throw C-rigs before dusk, then topwaters until it got dark. Then, everything gets put up w/exception of T-rig. The bait of choice would be 10" power worms, nothing else. That's all you would need and plus it makes it a whole lot easier with less clutter in the boat. There were many a nights that we would load up on biggens. We never busted a DD fishing at night, but we had more 7, 8, and 9's than a man could count during that span. I suspect we had some DD's on, but just never landed them. Each trip we would always go do the same stuff and very rarely we would come away without some toads. There's not much more exciting stuff than setting the hook on a fish and all you get is hard pull and then hearing the fish bust the surface and you trying to get it in the boat without seeing any of the commotion. Fishing time would vary, but usually we were ready to go home by 1am-2am. That way the next day isn't totally ruined, that is, if I could get that darned Ron to agree it's time to go. We would use a spotlight for running and our most successful trips came on new moon instead of full moon phase. Like someone said in a previous post, you can see better with as little of light as you can get by with, especially on new moon. We knew our areas so well, that one night I kicked my buddy's favorite rod/reel combo over the boat accidentally, and this turd was adamant on getting it back, so he stripped down to his skivvies, slithered in amongst trees and everything, and swam down in 10ft of water and found that rod. It took several attempts, but he really did it! At 2am in the morning! He went feet first and felt it on bottom and brought 'er up.....thank goodness, saved me $500 replacement cost, haha....honest to God true story. I could tell you some more entertaining experiences, but we'll leave it at that. What happens at RayBob at night, stays at RayBob...man, I miss those nights!

I agree with Cypress Springs and Bob Sandlin as being EXCELLENT night fishing places to fish. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
