The second one is the better of the two.
John Wayne movies seem to be John Wayne playing John Wayne playing the character.

Jeff Bridges played the character. I did not see Jeff Bridges playing the character. I saw the character.

John Wayne won an Oscar as best actor in the first. Jeff Bridges did not win an Oscar for the second version.

I pick the Duke version over the Dude version. Not so much because of John Wayne, but because of the entire supporting cast. Every person in it was born for that role. Even Glen Campbell and he was a terrible actor, but he was perfect for that role. Jeff Bridges was good, but he will always be The Dude.

The remake was true to the book.
1969 had it Hollywooded up a bit

Marion Wayne made some great movies but wasn't anything like his on screen persona. For example he hated horses and only rode the bare minimum to complete his scenes. He also wore 4 inch lifts in his shoes to make him look taller.

The Duke was my late grandma's favorite actor, she had every movie he made on beta and vhs, she met him a few times in Cali and had a few autographed photos, this picture hangs in my living room, one of the very few things I was able to collect from my grandparents home

Really ???? He was turned down for military service because of a shoulder he wrecked playing Football. He lost his scholarship and dropped out of college......... Why would some one who was 6'4" tall wear lifts?? Check your facts before making statements that make you look silly. noidea scared

I've always loved John Wayne movies but he was not turned down for military service due to a football injury.

Quote:
In 1944, Wayne received a 2-A classification, deferred in support of [the] national interest. A month later the Selective Service decided to revoke many previous deferments and reclassified him 1-A. But Waynes studio appealed and got his 2-A status reinstated until after the war ended.

Some people who knew Wayne (including his wife Pilar) say he felt bad about not having served. Some think his guilty conscience was one reason he became such a super patriot later. The fact remains that the man who came to symbolize American patriotism and pride had a chance to do more than just act the part, and he let it pass.

Kinda prefer the remake myself. Robert Duvall was great in the original though. "I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man"
