Headed down there this weekend with the kids and the boat. I’ve never fished it before, any pointers? Was primarily gonna be dropping jugs but also rod and reel fishing too. Hoping to fill the cooler with some blues and channels..... Anything will help! Thx guys

Use to run trot lines there and caught lot of nice channel cats. Believe it or not we baited lines out with soap bait .

It has been years snce I was there in the summer of 1979. The reason I went, was because of one lady I worked with- her family had a lot of get togethers there. Her uncle set trotlines on the lake. We were obviously not where they went. I set lines out near a bridge that the river fed into the lake. Yep, we used soap too. Caught Blues & Channels. The lady's uncle seems to have set lines out on the other end of the lake, near some canyon walls. She said the lake would be shallow, then have holes. The big Yellows would be in the holes. She said they skied near where they had the lines set at. Of course they were using perch for bait. But she would show pics of 40+ pound Yellows from their trips.

Wow....I hope it is still like that! I have always heard it is a good catfish lake. I know they got some rain recently, hopefully this weekend will be good.

Good luck on your Lake Mathis trip. Next trip head north to Ray Roberts I can show you where to catch some nice blue cats. This one is from 3 weeks ago. Live perch and cut bait have been doing the trick.

It was a good trip but very humid! I must have seen at least 75 jugs on the lake....they were everywhere! Fishing was good, we ended up with 8 keepers and had fun. We stayed at the state park which had nice facilities. All the catfish hit on fresh cut bluegill and gar chunks marinated in Dead Red.
