Ok, I took karstopos advice and set up different reels with different lines.
I have a 908-5 Cabelas Bighorn rod. Its nothing fancy, but is still functional. I actually purchased it for my 13 year old son. The problem I have is that its performance, or the lack there of, has been driving me crazy. Just saying.
Well, this morning I tried a 6 wt flat floating line on the rod. Why, because someone gave me the line and I can. LOL
Well, the line is only 50ft long and I was casting it into the backing. I was having difficulties achieving 40 feet with the 5wt line that came with the combo. I even tried another 5 WT line and that line was not performing any better either. The 6wt flat line was shooting 55-60 feet.
So I got another wild hair and tired the scientific anglers wet cel WF-5-S sink II line. Almost the same performance as the 6 WT flat line.
The comments I have read about, its a x wt rod, but I like the way it throws y line better, are making more cents now.
Wow... it is amazing what I am learning just by playing around with my fly gear.

I too feel that going for a heavier line is better. The only exception that I have had is my little CGR 2 weight, I found it felt overloaded with a three weight line. Lately I like the shorter shooting type lines.

I have rods ranging from $50 to $1300 and the performance greatly varies, but what I have found to be consistent is that typically, unless a line is matched perfectly with a rod it typically loads the rod easier when you "overline" it (go at least one size heavier than the rod wt). This will definitely help. Having the correct length of tippet/fly/line combo can make a significant difference.

Tug, this actually helps. You are reinforcing what I am noticing. THANK YOU!!
My feeble experance was noticing that it was more important to match the line with the rod than purchasing expensive fly line.
I have 5 different 5wt WF fly lines and the silly 6wt flat line out performs them on this rod.
Its humorous for me that you bring the leader/tippets. I just started playing around with those lengths after watching a fly fishing video with Lefty Kreh. Lets just say I am now tying a two piece leader out of 25 and 20 pound mono and tippet out of 14 pound fluorocarbon.
I have been fishing for the majority of my life. I feel like I have gotten my but kicked with fly fishing.
