My son has decided he wants to catch or help catch a shark.
We are headed to Galveston for a day trip in a couple weeks.
I don’t care what type of shark it is.....how should I try to catch one?
Rod and reel set up? Beach or jetty better? Bait? Hooks? Line?
Prefer a spinning reel but open to suggestions.

lots of small sharks 2-3 footers in the surf right now. they'll eat anything, shrimp, cut bait, squid, etc. you can catch them off the beach, pier, jetty, etc

No fish is too good for the grease.

even the 5-6 footers come into the 1st and 2nd gut if there's a lot of bait close to shore.

What size reel and what rod do I need?
Budget friendly would be great as this will not be a usual activity.

If you are specifically targeting sharks, then you need to get you a good heavy surf rod at least. I was in Galveston last week and fished some with cut bait and finger mullet from the surf. I was using just my bass rods and it really wasn't fit for the purpose. The biggest problem is that they don't hold enough line. To make the 2nd gut, you need 200 yds+. I'd walk out and cast and then have to reel in a bunch of line because I was spooled just getting it out there.
I hooked a 3-4 ft blacktip that was pretty much the max of what that setup could handle. Got him all the way up into ankle deep water before he cut my leader.
I hooked another one that nearly broke my rod in half. Literally, it was bent past 90 deg and I thought it would snap. Whatever he was, he was heavy and strong, and he cut my exactly 1 ft off my 3 ft leader. I thought about hooking up a wire leader, but after that I decided I wasn't geared up to handle something that big.

Look at some Surf combos, Penn makes some good equipment. I wouldn’t get anything smaller than a 9000 series reel and a 7-10’ rod

Just came back from port Aransas jetty & caught a smaller size hammer head on cut mullet + a 28lb bull red. You have to secure your rod after casting. Some people shove a pcv pipe into the rocks. I use a bucket with pcv pipes bolted to it & filled with water (when fishing jetty). Then I activate line alarm or backoff the drag so the fish can run. The rig I use is a dropper loop knot with 80lb line that puts the bait above the surf weight (3oz or 5oz breakaway sinker), or a pulley rig so the weight doesn't get caught in the rocks when a fish is on. Use circle hooks & have long pliers ready. For a cheaper surf combo, I recommend the Daiwa DF100A Saltwater Spinning Reel with ugly stick 10-12ft big water surf spinning rod, heavy power. The reel can hold 300+ yards of 30lb mono easy. I prefer having baitfeeder or line alarm so the fish can run, but you can just back off the drag after the cast & tighten it when you get a run. Get a cast net & go to a boat ramp in the morning for bait. Cut the bait, cast, set in pcv, tight line it, and back off drag or set line alarm on. Landing a shark is easier on the beach then a jetty of coarse. Good luck on you trip.

Was just their last weekend off the south jetty. Good rod/reel setup that will last would be a Penn Squall 30. Can get them at bass pro with a good rod for 179.99 . We used cut croaker and cut ribbonfish and caught several 3-4' sharks. Lot of fun. Good luck
