Are there "Heavy Duty" rotors or similar for a 04'F150 4.6L 2wd ? and pads? I have a feeling that I will need something like this soon. I am acquiring a 23.4 ft. Travel Trl. from my X. I need to replace my rotors anyway, although I still have very good brakes. My pads are over a yr.and a half old...but good brand. Tell me I'm ignorant but I guess I have drums on the rear!! I have never pulled anything but my Wellcraft (20ft). I'm assuming I can pull this Travel Trl. The trk does not have a towing pkg that I know of. I had the trl.hitch put on when I got the trk in 04'. Any input would help here. ed

First, a question....what kind of trailer light plug is on your truck, how many pins?
As far as rotors, buy a name brand, I suggest "Professional Grade" from Rock Auto and a set of ceramic pads.
The trailer will have electric brakes. You will probably need a brake controller installed on your truck.
Other than that, you are good to go.

I have the all the plug parts (7+4 pin) and the controller to be installed after my SIL brings the trl home. Installation will come later by a pro !! Any reason why Rock Auto? I assume you are referring to HD rotors from RA ? Or do I NEED HD rotors?

No special reason. They usually have the best price. Now, I'm going to pass on WHAT I DO, I always have new rotors turned to be sure they are true. A lot of people will say that is stupid, they are new. BUT I have found that every rotor I have replaced, and I did it for 39 years, has been a few thousands out of true. That may not sound like much, but it will cause the pulsating brakes.

If there is nothing wrong with your brakes leave them alone. With the 4.6L your going to have a lot more problems going than stopping. With trailer brakes, you will have no problem stopping at all. Pulled a 30' TT with a '94 chevy for years without a brake controller and never had a problem other than a brake job every 40k miles.

Check your owners manual and see what they say about towing heavy. They may recommend a transmission cooler be installed. As far as brakes, you can use what you've got or try a disk upgrade. Do not get slotted or drilled disks. They cool a little better but wear faster and are more likely to warp. https://www.fleet.ford.com/resources/ford/general/pdf/towingguides/2004_All.pdfThis might help in seeing if you have the right truck.

Just curious, but how did you control the amount of braking applied to the trailer brakes without a controller? Didnt use the trailer brakes at all. I dont guess I would recommend it but if you mind your stopping distances and your not in the mountains the truck brakes go a long ways.

I would not pull a TT that weighs almost as much as the tow vehicle without trailer brakes. Also it is probably not legal and lots of liability issues if in a wreck. At the minimum you will get cited. Controllers are not that expensive. Definitely put a trans cooler on that truck. Easy to install and not much money. I put them on all my Fords that did not have tow pkg..

i put vented and slotted rotors on my Ford Excursion. Allison is correct, they warp way too fast! Next will be HD rotors with ceramic pads.

Don't mean to turn the tables, but with the 4.6 I'd be more concerned about going than stopping with a travel trailer. Maybe I'm wrong though, I've never driven one

Trans temp is what concerns me. Brakes on truck and trailer should be fine. I would prefer a 3/4 ton to tow with.

Trucks aren't what they used to be. A modern 3/4 ton is so damn overkill for a 23 foot trailer it isn't even funny.
It will work that 4.6L but take your time with it and it will be fine. If your going to tow any kind of distance in any kind of heat (summer in texas) I think a tranny cooler is a wise investment.
