Think of it just like you would your bass rod. You don't need anything too heavy, and you need to be able to hold it and cast it all day long. As long as you stay in the bay and on flats, then I wouldn't even worry about getting something rated for salt water. All you need to do is wipe down the reel, and hose off the rod guides at the end of the day.
My recommendation is a spinning reel, with a 7' medium action rod. The medium sized spinning reel, usually a 300 or 3000 series from most manufactures. Spool it up with 10 or 15# braid, and then attach a 6' leader of 20# flouro with an FG knot.
