I’m in the market for one or the other. I think the Ultrex would be my first choice but I’m leaning towards the Xi5 bc of the cost difference and I run lowrance graphs

My questions for the guys with Xi5’s. How hard is it to go to the bank if you get hung up in a tree or lay down, brush etc? And when it’s on autopilot in 4 ft of water or less how many stumps does it hit? I seem to hit them a lot at fork, you know bc they are everywhere. So I’m wondering how well it navigates in those situations.

I’ve had both, the xi5 hangs off the front of the boat too much which scares the [censored] outa me and sounds like a cheap toy RC car.
I can’t say one bad thing about the Ultrex

I don;t know about the tough as nails part. I've seen more Ultrexes in the shop that looked like the drove over a land mine with shattered shafts than any other trolling motor I've ever seen. They are great trolling motors but I wouldn't say as tough as nails.

If you already have Lowrance HDS graphs I would definitely go with the Xi5 unless you want to spend $1000 more fpr the motor plus the cost of new graphs to get the full functionality.
The only reason I bought the Xi5 was because of numerous problems with MK service on my Autopilot/copilot. I really liked that motor but it does not have spot lock, last time in the shop....not motors fault since a squirrel chewed the coil cord while in storage....it was in the shop for 5 months, THE ENTIRE SPRING! I bought the Xi5 and have not regretted it at all.
Works very well with Blue Nitro's mount, that takes care of any issues with it sticking over the front too far. In many trips to the service center I saw lots of shattered MK shafts.
As far as pulling the motor up there are threads online about a short bike handle that makes it much easier to bring in, it hasn't been a big problem for me so I haven't done it yet but prolly will in the future.
I used wireless on my Autopilot and hate foot pedals so I have not ever used the Xi5 pedal.

Best reason right there if you can't think of another one. I've seen those barely hanging on to the front of boat. Not for me.

I looked at both pretty extensively over the course of 8 months. I did not like the way the MG hangs off the front of the boat. That was my main concern, knocking it loose or off. Went with the Ultrex 112 52" and I run lowrance graphs. Couldnt be happier with the product!

Isn't the XI5 very similar to the MK Terrova with mounting and steering and $$?

yes they both have mounting that is not good for bass boats unless all you are fishing is open water.

People get too concerned about the way the trolling motor hangs over the edge. The base that is attached to the boat is long and solid, even more solid than some traditional tms I have used. I never babied mine. I hit stumps, ran up too shallow and in the stowed position struck docks pretty hard. The only damage that I got was some scratches on the plastic cover. They are much better than most people assume. When was the last time you heard of someone actually having one fall off or get damaged other than the shaft.
