Has anyone fished this area in Wyoming on the North Platte planning a trip next may and was needing some information? From what I’ve read a 6wt rod will be good for casting in windy conditions, I know nothing about fly fishing but have almost a year to figure it out, It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I need advise on line selection, leader, tools needed and anything else you might think of.

Bug,

Been up to the North Platte 4-5 times. The best outfitter on the river is Ugly Bug Fly Shop. Blake owns the place and Vince runs the shop. Some great guides. PM me and I will give you a name. It is mainly a nymphing game, very little dry fly fishing at least when I have been in June. Not sure about May conditions up there.

PM me if you have any questions.

I have never fished there, but everything I’ve been told is that it’s a big and deep river, nymphing and streamers are the way to go.

Just watching videos and reading this fly fishing is like a foreign language, a lot to learn. Can you use a Carolina rig or maybe a drop shot?

small split shot, maybe, but drop shot or carolina rig no. Most of the stuff used is size 12-20 unless we’re talking streamers. Nymphing requires a strike indicator, streamers extra weight or maybe a sink tip line if you want to get the fly down

Water levels could be an issue in May, very high water. You might Look into fishing out of Saratoga also for the Platte.
Great advice above, Ugly Bug would have all your answers and be a great guide for the trip.
Check into runoff during May, it is weather dependent on when it will start down.
