I am a novice when it comes to TX saltwater. I have been and caught the trout and reds but am wondering if people target flounder specifically other than gigging? I am originally from the NC coast and we flounder fish live bait with a carolina rig setup and some form of minnow (mullet, pogey, mud minnow, croaker, pin fish etc...) I would usually target docks that have access to a little bit deeper (10ft or more) water coming past the ends or humps in the mouth of creeks, grass etc with the carolina rig and have caught numerous citation size flounder. My question is if people do this on the TX coast? I know artificial is big and I am comfortable with using artificial but would rather catch my own bait and go the other route. Just curious how the technique changes. On the east coast we have access to the inland waterway that has numerous cuts into the ocean, and plenty of creeks and backwater as well, so not sure how much of that is in TX or if just the access to the water that is a little deeper is the same.

Absolutely. Flounder is my preferred eating fish, so we get after them hard. I target small drains and cuts in grass flats. Or cuts coming out of back lakes. A tequila/chartreuse sand eel on a 1/8 oz oldham screw lock head is more than ol' flattie can stand.
When I am after flounder, I use a much stiffer rod than for trout or reds, they clamp down on the jig so hard you have to really pop the steel home or they'll just open their mouth and swim away.
Jigs are rigged on 20# braid.

Yeah the rod does play an importance. I was just wondering technique differences and if I could target them like I do on the east coast. Nothing like feeling that thump and waiting a few seconds to set the hook. My experience here in TX has been there are a lot of flats in certain areas so just the makeup of the area is different than I am used to.

See if you can find some of Jantzen Millers old posts on TKF. I dont think he posts on TFF. He catches hundreds of big flounder year after year and month after month around Galveston. He fishes a lot of harbor type areas and deeper water spots. Gulp is a big part of what he uses, but I think hell use bait too on occasion. He even got involved in some flounder research program not too long ago. I wish I could remember all the particulars of what he shared.
I cant say I often target flounder, but I like catching and eating them. I find them in shallow bays and marsh lakes at times. Marsh drains with shell seem especially good. Piers and pilings with moving water. I dont use bait, but flies like shrimp patterns and clousers are good, but its harder to fish deeper water with fly tackle. If the water is much beyond 5-6 feet, then Im out.
