When the wind is blowing 10-15, do you fish the wind blown points? Typically I fish the protected areas, but I am wondering If I should go take a beating in the waves for more fish.

When the wind is blowing you can almost always find feeding fish on a wind blown point....

It just makes for some tough boat maneuvering etc

Not sure what your idea of a beating is but yes the wind is your friend in the summertime.

I used a 20# anchor for many years on Fork. I know all the Young Guns think using an anchor is gauche but it works well.

I now have Spot Lock. thumb

My last 2 club tournaments the wind was blowing over 20 mph.

First tournament I found a big school of 2-3 lb fish with an occasional 3+. As soon as I put my 3rd 3+ in the livewell, I left because all the fish were close to the same size and I had caught 20-30 fish.

I bounced around fishing protected areas and finally ended up on the roughest spot on the lake. It was a long point about 10' deep that stretched out a couple hundred yards from shore.

I caught fish on every 2nd or 3rd cast for over a half hour. These fish were mostly 3.5 - 5 lbs. I think I only caught 2 less than 3 lbs.

Then our most recent tourney My son and I caught 3 fish first thing in the morning on topwater. Last fish was caught at 6:23. We fished all over the lake and wind was probably blowing close to 30 mph at times. I told my son we were going to run up a creek to get out of the wind, I was just trying to put a 3rd fish in the boat, since I had 12 lbs with my first 2.

Ran into a buddy that was having motor problems. So I told him I wouldn't abandon him and would go fish the opposite shore and wouldn't leave until I made sure his boat was okay, he figured it was just flooded.

I moved over to the roughest spot on the lake (different lake) and at 11:45 caught a 6.5 lber. I kept fishing that shoreline and almost every little subtle point along that shoreline had a 3-4 lb bass on it. The waves were breaking on the shore like at the beach, it was close to 100 degrees outside and all of these fish were in 2' of water just off the shore.

I just put the boat on spot lock and fish out the back of the boat. I'll move down the shore 40-50 yards and then spot lock again, until we eventually found most of the fish were on small points or any change in the shoreline. We caught fish until 1:00 like this. Only had 2 fish that were shorter than 18".

So I'm a believer now.

I love fishing in the wind! I HATE getting to my spot though.

This has been typical for my lake since about March. This is a point I set up on and fan cast all around with spot lock on. Simply put the nose in the wind and get on the back deck where it's smooth and fish.

Like I say, I do hate going across the lake in this [censored] though.

As long as I can keep my boat out on a spot I will be in the wind. Running from it never has produced for us. The fish know where the wind blows bait and they set up on locations where that will happen when the wind blows.

I fish both the wind blown point and the non wind blown areas as well. Let the fish tell you which one they want and go according to where they are biting. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

One of the best days I ever had on Fork was Memorial weekend and the south wind blew 25-35 all weekend. Sat with a 20# & a 10# anchor down on one deep spot and killed them. Best five was 41.53 (aka 50# bag for some of the guys) LOL

I fished Fayette on a wind blown point today (in 15-20mph), and they sure were stacked up. But just like txfour, I have an xi5 to hold my spot while I fish. it's definitely a requirement for me to fish windy points to have a GPS trolling motor.

One 10-pounder is better than ten 1-pounders; but 100 1-pounders is ok too!

This time of year especially the wind is your friend. Some of my best days in the summer have come when I'm taking wave after wave over the bow of the boat while slinging a big ole crankbait.

Ha, yeah the wind helps especially when it's this hot but like txfour said it can be rough getting to your spot. Best thing I did for myself this last year was buy a Ultrex. Sure pays for itself on these windy days.

For apples to apples comparison a buddy and I went out earlier this year same lake same time. Separate boats(we don't like each other's fishing style). I go to very windy side and he went to the protected side. Hour later we meet up at a half windy half protected point. Ask him how he is doing and he says they ain't biting today. He hadn't caught one yet. I had landed close to 25 in the wind. 10 cast and 2 bass and I knew where and what they wanted. Put TM on high and went to town. Was a beating though nearly took a dip when I bumped a tree. Never could get him to get in the wind and he zeroed that day.

Do you position your boat upwind from the spot and cast with the wind, or vice versa?

No doubt there are fish to be caught out of the wind.

Im not much of a bank beater though, or one that covers a ton of water catching scattered fish.

I find fishing windy points and shores allows you to find fish that are grouped up. Instead of getting a bite or 2 at high percentage places, you can catch 10 or more without moving much.

I definitely dont believe fish are going to swim across the lake to find a windy point. But fish that are usually deeper will likely move a little more shallow and follow the baitfish to the shore.

Depends. If I have folks with me that are not proficient at casting I will position the boat upwind so they can throw with the wind. If I am with someone that can hurl the bait a long distance I will hold the boat and throw into the wind.

This is my godson with a good one 5.52 from yesterday afternoon at JP. We were right out on the main lake with Spotlock running. Catching them on a 1/2 oz jig in 20' off a brushpile. Wind was blowing a steady 15 gusting to 20+ at times.

Throwing into the wind on this spot but others we locked upwind and threw back at em. I am amazed at how much better the Spot lock works on the new Ultrex compared to my early Gen Terrova. It really is a game-changer (there's that word again) for open water structure fishing.

I still carry one some days. If I find a point or rock pile loaded with fish Ill drop the anchor instead of using up my battery on spot lock.

Yes! When most anglers run from the wind, I will sit in it all day.

More lake to myself and I find more fish in the wind!

Points or also overlooked retaining walls and bridges that are getting smashed by the waves all seem to work for me when the wind kicks up
