Well I didn't think it would happen to me, but I learned the hard way yesterday that it's really freaking hard to get back in the boat without a ladder. I don't have a trim switch on my motor so I couldn't use it to lift me into the boat. After several failed attempts, I finally got back in but it was really a beating in rough water.
Any suggestions for a good emergency ladder for my Skeeter?

Man one of the first things I did as a new bass boat driver was practice getting in the boat from the water. I anchored close to shore in 6-8 of water and jumped in with and without a PFD. The boarding ladder was too high, couldnt get my foot in the first step. Finally figured it out and found two ways, get a knee on the ladder or climb up the motor and step to the ladder. Thankfully I never used that training as I never fell off my boat.
I wont recommend this unless youre a young tough Navy veteran that has passed the Navy drown proofing school.

on boats I've had with no boarding ladder, I kept a short rope tied to a cleat and tucked in a rear compartment. The line was tight from the cleat to the edge of the locker and I kept a loop knot tied in the end. If in the water I could open the rear compartment, adjust the length as needed on the cleat and use the loop to put my foot into. If you have a hand rail on boat you can do the same thing and just wrap the rope around the hand rail.

I learned how to get in the boat while at Choke Canyon. A big Gator was paralleling the boat keeping me from fishing the shoreline grass. Every time I turned the boat she also turned, not wanting me to get any closer. While watching this gator I hit a stump and fell out right in front of her. At 300 lbs.; but much younger I was back in the boat in less than 5 seconds. I don't know how I did it; but I did and it was at the high point of the boat near the bow.

Thats a good idea. A loop on the last step of the boarding ladder would work too, and stay out of the water when ladder folds up.

I just ordered a boarding ladder from Ranger for my old boat. Haven't had a problem yet and don't want one. Another reason that I don't fish alone any more. If I can't get up the ladder, maybe I can hold on long enough for us to troll into some shallow water.

You do not have too get in the boat....
.. just step on the lower unit fins and wait till help arrives, or until the boat floats to shore.
If that doesn't work...
..buy a ladder from any company (stern mount, jackplate mount). Hang on , or climb aboard if able.
hope this helps.

this above. i just put one of the newer R and R 3 step ones on my older skeeter. if you don't have holes in your jack plate or don't have a jack plate, you can call them and get a bracket that mounts to the motor holes for cheap.

My experience says the rope with a loop will not work. As soon as you put weight on that foot, the loop goes under the boat, making you no closer to getting out than when you started. If you have a LOT of upper body strength it will work. For the most part putting a foot on the motor won't help either. If you are a relatively small person or in good shape then no problems. The ladders need to be longer!

So having a gator close by gives one the momentum one needs to re-enter the boat without a ladder. Gotcha.

...buy a ladder......hang on (you may be injured and cant climb up), or climb aboard if able. Some people may not be able to afford a ladder...
..for those, my advice was simple, step on the lower unit
.your ankles will be in the water once the motor is trimmed up.
