Ok , I am not one to tell fish stories but I went catfishing at Lake Fork Wednesday in the wind and rain. Caught 20-30 good fish in 20 and 30 feet deep water. I use 40 lb braid on an ambassador 6500 and a pro angler rod 7 foot long mh . I got a bite and the fish would not turn back , he ran drag and busted my line. Now this was using power pro braid and is very good line. My rod doubled and the tip touched the water and I am no Small boy. So that was using my regular Stubby’s cheese bait which is the best bait. Now I have tried them all but Stubby’s is the deal especially on Lake Fork.

Stubby and I were fishing one day and same thing happened, however I was able to bring it in and it was a 33lb carp. We thought I had caught a lake record channel cat

Are you sure the line broke? Braid knots have a tendency to slip after it gets wet and lubricated. I throw a couple of half hitches after tying my knot and cinching down or a drop of super glue on the knot will stop this.

Palomar knot is what you need to tie with braid.

Abu 6500’s have a 15lb drag....I agree line shouldn’t have broke, something else went wrong or line had a nic in it.

My line did break and I know how to tie a knot and have had my knots tested on a machine before. Now it is possible that my line had been damaged on timber at lake fork. I was just totally surprised to have a fish pull that hard on that rig which I specifically set up for blue cat fishing. Now I don’t target blues in lake fork but catch loads of channel cats with a few blues mixed in at times. I have been a regular bass then catfisherman for over 40 years but I am not immune to making a mistake. The fish just swam away and would not turn or slow down. It ran my drag a good bit before the line broke. I set my drag fairly tight because I use braid and I pull fish from stumps.

I always love hearing these stories and I believe this is about the 3rd time I’ve read one of yours!!!!! The funny thing is, I know they’re true!!!!! popcorn HS just try this!!!! Next time your out crank that drag down to about 7 lbs and don’t touch it ok buddy!!!! smile A Toad warm water Bluecat or Flathead with the drag cranked down on a “ straight away from you run “ can pop 100 lb braid!!!!!! What your waiting for is that first turn!!!!!! I repeat, your waiting for that first turn pardna!!!!!!!! If they stop before they turn your usually screwed anyways, but if you get that first turn, mark my words IT’S ON!!!!!! coach whip whip whip When a monster sees a bait, hits it and feels that crazy “ full drag resistance “ they get real excited and start singin this!!!!!! roflmao roflmao roflmao cheers
