I'm doing a 3 day / 2 night float trip down the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado in August. Has anyone fished this before? I'd be curious to know what to expect and how it fishes. Any insight one way or the other would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

My only advice would be to not try to fish from the bridge. If you hooked up with anything from up there, I don't know how you'd ever land it wink

Day trip once...15 years ago. Fast and furious most of the way, time for a couple of mends on a big nymph, toss again repeat. We did get out on a few cut banks and did well on 12 and 14 caddis and stimulators, gorgeous scenery, when looking, make sure your fly rod is hidden... Heard one snap followed by foul language fom the guide...,was NOT me

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

IF you hit it right, the top water could be off the hook. Always wanted to do that. Please send report when you're back. If it's super cool, would love to know the outfitter you chose.

Should be gorgeous and a lot of Big colored up fish there.

I'm hoping for some rising fish that time of year. Would prefer not to watch an indicator and mend line all day, but will do whatever it takes. From what I understand, the scenery is incredible. Thanks for the input.

I only know what I have read, and that is a lot of books smile It is mostly nymphing in the summer due to the color of the water (deep green). Flows usually stay around 500-800 until mid August. I hear the scenery is amazing and the comraderie on most trips is really fun. Expect good browns and fat pig rainbows (whirling resistant Hofers). Most of the drainage is in a critical water shortage, so I don't know how that will play out as the summer takes hold. I already cancelled my late summer trip to Lake City in favor of a trip to the White/Norfork.

I rented a 2 man pontoon with a casting deck up front. paid a guy $75 to take me via jet driven flat bottom, drop me off deep in the canyon. It took my brother and I all day to float back down. We caught well over 100 trout that day. We got into some real monsters too! We learned real quick not to use 5x or 6x tippets. Be sure to have 3x tippets on you in case you find some holes with big fish. I believe it was July or August.
