So the steering on my new boat was very stiff so I tried to clean and grease the 2 bars by the outboard but when I disconnected them and started moving them around to clean I realized one of them was moving funny and they were not moving together. After some looking around I found that one of the cables had come out of the assembly behind the steering wheel.

So simple question....what are my options to get this fixed? Do I have to get a whole new assembly with the cables attached? Also is this something an amateur should attempt to fix or take it to an expert?

The steering assembly has warnings that say to not open that if it is opened it has to be replaced so not sure how I can reattach or replace the one cable.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

That is a rotary steering helm and cables. If the locking pin area or that one cable has to be replaced you are looking at changing the complete helm with cables out. Cost about 700.00 parts and labor. You can get a Sea Start Hydraulic system for a little more.

Thanks that is what I was afraid of. Anyone know a good place in North Dallas to get this done? I will definitely consider changing to hydrolic if it isn’t too much more expensive.
