You seem upset. Did I say something that came across wrong?

Ok. I could see where after what went on with you and the commercial industry you would be upset or have a bad taste. It's the internet its hard to tell peoples manner and feelings, etc.

I dont run my guide service as a full time venture, I would have a hard time turning a profit with the expenses added that you mentioned. I enjoy taking people and yes it does provide some supplemental income to help take care of my family.

I do not have an issue with people catch and release fishing along the trinity.

I do not have anything against eating smaller alligator gar however, I do not think they should in the trinity due to contamination.

My large peeve is the folks targeting big fish which are not safe to eat, required to sustain the population, and hard to replace. Most of the outrage is over certain folks killing those fish for fun and then dumping them in a field to rot. I wouldn't have as much issue with a fellow taking a big one with a tag system or something along those lines and respecting that resource. There are people killing 2 to 6 of the big fish every weekend and dumping them to rot. Its purely killing for fun with no side benefit of management, good food for misfortuneate etc.

I do not have any issue with dropping pigs where they stand, tilapia, grass carp etc. because those cause economic issues, habitat loss, out compete natives, etc. Those large alligator gar are apex predators in a for the most part natural setting that do not need human influencesd population control. They only spawn once every 3 to 5 years and they will cannibalize their young if they spawn in consecutive years.

They already have a protected breeding season. That was used for the first time during 2015.

I help the state with whatever they need when they ask. If they were to ask for too much money I'd have to hang it up and find something else too do.

Yall lose a lot of part time guys when they implemented that license program?

Long but excellent read. I have bow fished for longnose gar and Buffalo in the past. I found someone to eat every fish taken. IMHO I think that there are lakes and areas that support harvest, and others where the trophy fish should be protected. You can't really accurately judges the length in Bow fishing. I support making it a lottery or slot where these ancient fish can be caught but where few trophies are taken. Taking smaller fish improves the genetics of the species and for those who chose to eat them is safer, and in terms of toxin build up in the meat. This also preserves a resource, increases economic value and tourism to the fishery. There will always be differing viewpoints on the forum, killing something that takes 75-100 years to mature just to kill seems to me to be a waste.

I'm glad I stumbled onto this thread. I was recently watching a show about the mississippi that discussed the invasive Asian Carp. During this show they discussed what allows some of these species to thrive and take over the lakes and rivers. One key factor was the loss of native large fish that would normally be in the systems (large Alligator Gar were specifically mentioned, and are nearly gone). On this same river, further upstream the carp were not exploding in population, the biologist noted that in these upper reaches there were much healthier , though still low, populations of larger Gar and other predatory (top of the food chain) fish.

Something I didn't see mentioned, but something we should all think about as we harvest from and invest in our fisheries.

Kevin

Several bow guys fishing Lake Belton. For whatever reason the creeps frequently bring their catch to the boat ramp and leave them. Either gar, drum or carp, not usually very large. Makes a huge mess at the boat ramp. Don't understand why they have to be so inconsiderate.

I'd be less concerned about how that affects the other fishermen than how it affects the fish. Total lack of respect.

Catch and release. The dream - to catch one of every species of Freshwater fish in our great state! If only I can resist Carp...
