Since the rain we had a week ago. The lake came up a foot. We marked a lot of fish on sonar yesterday evening but could not get them to bite.

I haven't been in a week or so because my boat is getting re-sprayed bed liner due to a crappy job the first time around : (

Where did you try and what did you try?

Fish are stacked up in the northern half of the lack on just about any contour line of humps, points, banks, etc.... This year I have found that location isn't too challenging because you literally can find fish almost anywhere you stop on a classic contour change on that awesome lake. The trick is knowing when to try artificial baits and when to use shad. I have found through extensive trial and error if the fish are deeper than 20 feet I rarely try to "trick" them anymore with artificial bait and have had great success with shad. Not sure if it is just because of how dirty the water is but it has become a pretty hard and fast rule for me and I rarely deviate from that. All I can say is the moment I started using shad this year a whole new world has opened up to me and I constantly boat several limits of fish 99% of the trips I take. If I don't find fish pushed shallower on contour changes then I may try for a few minutes to trick them with downriggers but so far I always have to stop and spot lock over them and feed them shad to be successful. This year this realization has taken me out of being at the mercy of lady luck on if the fish are shallow at the time I scan an area and if they are not shallow then I stop on the deeper edge where they are holding and catch them with shad. If the fish push shallow as they like to particularly do in mornings and evenings then I switch over to artificial bait and downrigging..... Hope that gives you a few general pointers for fishing FPH.

Thanks Clay, I havent fished any live bait only artificials and have had pretty good luck weather its with down riggers, trolling cranks or slabbing. I havent had time to fish in the last five weeks until yesterday evening and this evening and the hybrids seem to have lock jaw. We caught a few whites this evening but not a one hybrid. Im in the process of rigging up a bait tank, just waiting on the rest of my supplies to come in. I may have to try the live shad when I get it rigged up. Do you have any luck cast netting shad in the afternoon? Im pretty good with a net but havent thrown for shad much mostly shrimp in southern Louisiana.

Tuesday I was slammed. They were in, what I call, the canyons at 12-14. I don't use shad ever. Always artificial. People think I am crazy for not using shad but I catch lots of fish. When they are deep I run 20' plus deep runners and bang the bottom. Banging the bottom in FPH with your lure is the trick but don't tell anybody. I haven't featured this cartoon in my daily cartoons site but it fit the topic.

Timmy is the crankbait king of FPH lol.

About shad: I catch my shad from lake Kirby because I live about a mile from the ramp, I can throw my net two or three times and catch enough bait for a trip or two just a 50-100 yards from ramp. At phantom its much tougher as any sizable deeper lake is. I can catch them in charlottes cove (main boat ramp cove), and johnson park area pretty consistently. You will need a big net. Texas lets you use a 14 foot diameter net which is what I use.

Remember with the new Clean, Drain and Dry law you cannot transport shad from one lake to another in lake water! I used to catch my shad at Kirby as well but with the new law it is more trouble than it is worth to transfer them from boat livewell to treated city water then back to boat. Please read up on Clean, Drain, and Dry if you are not familiar with it.

Thanks guys I appreciate the advice,I hope to catch yall one day on the water. A friend of mine got me into down riggers a couple of years ago, thats when I started trying to learn more about the hybrids. Had always been a largemouth fisherman till then. Therefore I prefer artificial baits unless Im jug fishing for cats.
I love the cartoons Tim.
Thanks, Cody

Thats funny Tim!

Yall I was out fishing next to tim and I caught several 4 pounders while Tim used artificials and caught like 7-9 pounders next to me. I started downrigging with huge #17 pet spoons and caught several big doubles on the downriggers! Im not sure why but that day in that area my artificials and Tims artificials produces huge fish and the shad produced just average fish 🤔. Have no idea why!!!

It was the Michael Jackson Music that got them started. I swear by it.

I dont now about the Michael Jackson thing. But I hope they like CCR, Skynard, or some Texas country. Well see.
Could be the MJ thumper that gets them going.

Clay in response to: Where did you try and what did you try?

We tried just about everything I had in the boat Thursday afternoon. Started out trolling deep Crankbaits, even bouncing them off the bottom in places then added my down riggers into the mix with white and a chartreuse road runner buck tail jigs with trailers (which Ive had a lot of success with in the past). Im using 8 pound weights and was marking the balls on sonar right through the fish and could not get a bite. We then tried to slab a little with no success so decided to chase the white bass around for a while that were feeding on the surface and caught several small ones. We had fished mainly from the dam around to south of poverty point.

Thanks, Cody
