Headed to Galveston Tuesday with the family. Will try to do a little fishing. Any advice is much appreciated. How likely will I be to catch fish in the surf? Also, any common wading spots? I also have a 5 wt fly rod I am learning and I'm thinking of taking it as well.

Burton, I'll be there in a few weeks so please give me post-trip update!

In the surf, watch for birds. I was there with my family and while we were playing on the beach I'd always keep a rod handy and wade out when the birds came. I danced a zara spook under the birds and had a trout on darn near every cast. But cast 10 yards away from where the birds are circling and zilch.

With the fly rod, there are lots of places you can wade out in the bay. Or you can walk out on the jetties and fish the surf. Cast a clouser minnow as far as you can, and strip it in as fast as you can the second it hits the water. Any loud color combination is good, white/chartruse, pink/blue, blue/chartuse, white/red. Off the jetties you'll catch spanish mackrel, and possibly some trout or even redfish. With the 5wt, you may have trouble with the wind. And if the surf is bigger than 2-3 ft, then I wouldn't bother as it can get real frustrating.

I'll be heading down Thursday as well. I'm not gonna go out of my way to fish, but would love to hear how people do. I don't think we'll have more than a few hours in a morning to go anyway so we'll be limited to shore fishing.

Another tip I just thought of for your flies... get a waterproof fly box. Salt water will eat up your flies and eventually ruin your hooks. And once you use a fly in the salt, don't put it back into the waterproof box with the other flies. Rinse it off real good with fresh water and let it dry before boxing it up. First time I ever went, I bought like $80 worth of salt water flies. I opened up my box on the second day and they all had already started corroding.

So the second piece of advise is to not let yourself go crazy at the fly shop. A handful of colorful clousers as I said above, and maybe a shrimp pattern or two if you plan to go on the flats. Plus a waterproof plano box are all you need to buy. For your fly selections, make sure you can cast them in windy conditions with your 5wt.

Don't know that I could do it with a 5wt. It can be done, but you would have to be a double haul ninja. Now with my 8wt, it's no problem.

Update- surf is nestle quick to a few hundred yards out. Caught some whiting.. in a cast net. No bites on any lures or fresh dead shrimp. Only fished a couple hours since this is more of a family vacation than a fishing trip. Going to take my son over to the state park bay side in the morning. Haven't broke out the flies and won't in the surf. Maybe tomorrow in the bay.

Headed down today. Sounds like we may fish tomorrow morning for a few hours. If surf is Choco we may look st paying to fish the pier if it goes out into better water. I got a package of gulp, a silver spoon, and rig to fish bottom with dead bait if needed. Dont have a bait bucket for live shrimps.

Live shrimp work well in the cocoa? Not being sarcastic, I am really asking.

Well, I never fished the surf b/c fam was with me and kids don't sleep in. There was the tiniest hint of clearer water in what looked like 2nd gut Saturday early morning. Yesterday we left at 7 and it was whipping good and very choco. I would think shrimp would work anywhere there's fish really. I just think the fish move away from the choco though and get too far out to reach without a boat. Just my opinion. Pier looked popular every morning, I'm too cheap to pay $12 or whatever it was and I didn't have a net to hoist them up. Good luck!

Check SaltwaterRecon for surf cameras. You wont have to question where the blue water is, or how rough the surf is.
