It's amazing how long they will keep moving after you have killed them. I killed a rattler a couple years ago with a shotgun blast to the head. Left it in the road just in case. Came back an hour latter and it had slithered off the road. Shot it one more time "just in case" and chopped its head off with a shovel. Threw the rest of it on the driveway to show the other guys there. About six hours later it started crawling around. A little later it started flinging itself around real fast before finally dying for good. I'd never seen anything like that.

Live adult snakes control the amount of venom used in a bite.
Baby snakes dont control the amount of venom used as well as adult snakes.
Dead snakes dont use venom control when biting and dump their full load.
After killing a poisonous snake, you should sever the head with a long tool (shovel or spade) and use a long tool (shovel or grill tongs) to dump the head into a plastic container and seal it (duct tape) and toss into the trash to go to the landfill. I use plastic protein powder canisters with a wide screw on lid.

Similar thing happened to an uncle of mine. Chopped the head and went to toss it on the fence. Life Flight + tracheotomy + mucho medical bills. Thought he was a goner.
