Sorry if this was previously posted. The NTSB recently released their preliminary report on the accident that killed the woman pushing her bike across the street back in March. Pretty interesting that the car actually did see her about 6 seconds before impact and 1.3 seconds before impact decided it needed to make an emergency maneuver to avoid hitting her. Unfortunately, the emergency maneuver feature was disabled in order to avoid "erratic vehicle behavior". Instead the system relied on human interaction for emergency breaking maneuvers. At 40mph for 1.3 seconds the car had about 76 feet to react. In case you're wondering. The human first applied the breaks about a half a second after impact even though she looked up and saw the pedestrian just before the impact.
While this is a terrible tragedy where uber screwed up by disabling the cars ability to make emergency maneuvers I think in the long run it actually shows that the technology can work.

There is a Grapevine Police officer alive today ONLY because of the crash avoidance system in our newer trucks. Motorcycle cop decided to flip a u turn from the right lane on a road with 2 lanes going each direction. The truck was in the left lane traveling east the officer in the right lane traveling east decided to do a u turn and head back west... never looked just turned. The driver said brakes were applied before he could even react causing the far left corner of the bumper to strike the officer instead of striking him in the middle of the front bumper and running him over. That driver hated the system before it saved a life, now he doesnt want to drive anything without it. I'm a fan of the braking systems, but not really a fan of the kind that take over the wheel and make steering maneuvers for the driver.

. I'm a fan of the braking systems, but not really a fan of the kind that take over the wheel and make steering maneuvers for the driver. x 1 , my wifes car has both, thankfully can disable the lane/steering and leave the braking radar on. The braking is a great feature and will keep you where you need to be in the flow of interstate traffic, the lane correction is a nuisance and very intrusive to driving, until it has a better driver to end result interface I'll leave it off.
