I went out yesterday after the storms and scouted several structures. I found three (mid part of Long Ridge, 3-Jug Hump and south tip of Iron Wall Hump) where I could have caught all I wanted. After catching 10 at each spot I moved on. There are 2 patterns now. The best is 20 to 23 fow on humps/ridges next to deeper water like those mentioned above. The other pattern is on shallow (8 to 13 fow) structures near deeper water - like the shallow parts of Merimac Hump and Key Ranch Drop-off. There they are feeding on a new hatch of shad and working a #2 Mepps very slowly along the bottom gets the strike. On the deeper pattern, a medium to fast retrieve up from the bottom with a #4 Mepps is the ticket. Yesterday I ended up with 58 fish in 3 hours fishing both patterns.

Dennis, Im just a west texas guy with no knowledge of lake. Looking forward to getting there in a few weeks and the large mouth the lake can produce! This is where my wife wanted to vacation, so I didn't argue. I am gonna drag my boat down to do a little fishing while the wife and kids sleep in, any help in some knowledge of these humps and Drop off locatons would be much appreciated. I wouldn't ask, except it seems these are common known location being as you mentioned them. Coordinates would be great! wink

lake_rat: I just shared this with another visitor to Cedar Creek Lake:

I can tell you where a few brush piles are. There is one about 15 yards from the east end of Dam Hump West of the Pole in about 18 fow, one at the end of Saint Annes Point East in about 16 fow, one back in the neck of Dam Ridge where the water depth shallows up to about 13 fow and one on the north slope of Merimac Hump in about 16 fow. BigCrappie.com has put them all over the lake, and I'm sure you could find more just looking around in 10 to 20 fow with your electronics. I caught a 9 lb black off the brush pile on Dam Hump West of the Pole and a 7lb one on the pile on Saint Annes East - on Mepps spinners of course while fishing for white bass. I've often thought, if I were a black bass fisherman, I would work the brush piles rather than the docks. Hope this helps.

I can add that black bass fishers have told me that this is a lake where you need to work the docks.

Checked out 3 more spots yesterday and found boocoos (sp?) of fish on the south drop-off of Spillway Hump and on the south drop-off of Enchanted Isle Hump both in 20 to 23 fow. They took a Mepps #4 reeled medium to fast off the bottom.

LakeRat, check out the image file in Dennis signature. It is the map of his locations. Read the other links for his methods. Great guy, his sharing appreciated by us all.

Took TFFer Roger(hybridfisher) out yesterday to demo the Mepps method. We started out good with schooling fish about 200 yards out from my house. We had caught 6 when I realized my trolling motor was not working. Went back to house and took off prop to remove a wad of fishing line around the shaft. But that did not fix it. So, we used and anchor the rest of the trip. By the time we got back out the schooling action had stopped.

Then we started checking structures. Fish were hard to find - certainly not on all the structures they were on last time out. We finally found good quantities of whites on the Old Pond Dam (not on map) and Merimac Point. I showed Roger how to fish the #4 and the #2 Mepps, which are different in technique. For the #2 I leave a little slack in the line once the lure reaches the bottom, the jerk start the retrieve holding rod to the side and with hand on reel to keep reeling slowly after the jerk start. Hope to video this and put on YouTube sometime.

We quit when our white bass count got to 40 and had a total of about 50 fish caught with the others being mostly cats, a short hybrid and a couple of nice yellow bass. Forgot to stop and take some pictures.

Thank you Dennis for a wonderful fishing experience! You are a true gentleman and a fishing guru! I really appreciate the time you took to explain your method and I definitely made some progress. I know it will take quite a while to get to a high level of success. Dennis outfished me at least 5 to 1 all morning. Even when he handed me his rod and reel after catching several in a row I still got skunked for a while. It is definitely a learning curve but I think it will be worth the effort. I am changing over one of my casting setups (rod, reel, line) to better work with the Mepps.
It is awesome that so many folks on this forum are willing to share their expertise and time with others.
Thank you Dennis!

4X4: I use a 3/16 oz size of the type weight below. I put it about 15 inches up the line from the Mepps, which I tie straight to 10 lb fluorocarbon line.

I put a very slight bend in the #2 wire to cause it to spin more readily. If it twists on you, change direction of bend and make sure weight is straight and not creating a propeller effect.

My kids and grandkids came to visit over Fathers Day weekend, and we had a great time. Got to fish with grandson Sam and my daughter Carolyn on Saturday morning. We found fish at Merimac Point and caught 50 in about 2 hours in 16 fow using #4 Mepps. I fished a couple of other times the last few days and found fish at Drews Humps, Sams Hump and Carolyn Estates Point. Fish would take both #2 and #4 Mepps. Here are some pics from Fathers Day fishing:

Yesterday I took neighbors Paul H, Pat W and Paul J out for a CC fishing outing. We fished from about 3:30 to 7PM after waiting out a sudden afternoon thunder storm. Paul J is a new neighbor and fishing enthusiast, who wanted to learn the Mepps method. We ended up with 77: 61 whites, 4 short hybrids, 4 cats and 8 keeper-sized yellow bass. We found some fish at several spots including: Campbell's Hump, Dam Drop-off, Staubach Hump, Long Ridge and Long Ridge West. The last spot was the best. We left still catching fish, and Paul J finally caught on to the technique there. We caught fish on Mepps 4's and 2's in water depths of 15 to 16 and in 20 to 22 fow. The last spot was in 20 to 22 fow. The 2's and 4's worked about the same at the shallower spots and 4's best at the deeper spots. Here are some pics:

BigALWhaler: I don't do live bait. Maybe some of the other readers will weigh in. If I fished live bait I would go to the spots where I am finding fish and put the bait down on the bottom. Also use a thumper or make noise to draw fish under the boat - it works all year round - not just for dead=sticking in the winter.

Yesterday I took TFFer ShinerinTX (Brad), who drove down from DFW, out from 8:50AM til 1:20PM to demo the Mepps method. We started at Long Ridge West, where we caught 10 fish before they slowed. Then checked out Sam's Hump, Mid-lake Hump, Key Ranch, Key Rance North and 3-Jug Hump and found nothing. Then we found them on Merimac Point in 20 to 23 fow and sat there until we quit - still catching them. We ended up with 112: 101 whites, 5 cats, a short hybrid and 5 keeper sized yellow bass. Brad picked up the Mepps technique soon after we started. We caught most on #4. I tried and caught a few on 2's. Here's a couple of pics of Brad:

Thanks for showing us photos...we were up visiting Paul J this last weekend and picked up some trolling hellbenders/pet spoons! Glad he was able to hook up with Mepps technique!! We saw huge schools of shad on the graph and look forward to getting back up to Cedar Creek.

Took my sister Dee out this morning from 8:15 to 10:30AM. We went to a main lake hump and found fish in 23 to 25 fow. Sat there and caught 107: 100 whites, 3 cats, 2 short hybrids and 2 keeper yellow bass. All caught on #4 silver Mepps.

They came out early this morning at Merrimac.
There were several boats south of us but they did not stay long.
