Hi guys, looking to take my 8 year old for some crappie fishing at Lavon in the next week or so. We'll probably be fishing with minnows - any suggestions for a place where she can catch some fish? I've got a Lavon fishing map but it seems to be geared towards people with a boat. Thanks in advance.

Honestly this time of year trying to find Crappie from the bank will be difficult at best. Most fish are in 12-20’ water. You may find a fish or two along flooded willows early in 5-8’ water but still difficult from the bank. Your best bet for fishing from the bank would be for Catfish and Sand Bass early on wind blown banks.

There are a few to be had in 5-8’ but I concur that most are just out of reach for the bank angler.

Alright, thanks guys. Any particular place for sand bass? I know they tend to school but I've not had much experience fishing for them from shore.

You can go to Brockdale ramp and get some bass, sandbass and catfish fishing from the ramp out to the main point.

My opinion doesn’t really matter but I would skip the lake unless you plan on swimming too..
I would rather take my 8yr old to a pond or small lake and hunt perch.. like I said my opinion?! I speak from experience when I took my boys with me to lake but all Kiddos are different.. regardless have fun and good luck!
Sandbass are shallow most mornings with some crappie mixed in. Cut shad is doing really good right now as bait of choice early so bring your throw net.. you would need to look for a wind blown point with hard clay bottom.. cast into wind.. I usually use 1/2-3/4oz weight, double hooks with cut shad or minnows (cut) and slowly reel back to you on bottom.
If you cannot get bait .. same set up with tandem jigs will sometimes work
