... Then released after further questioning? Nah, they would throw the book at the shooter to emphasize that you cant shoot someone for stealing from you.

I take rods out, electronics off. Boat cover helps I think, or at least makes me sleep better.

Actually, Texas Penal Code Section 9.42 allows a person to use deadly force to prevent a burglary if the person reasonably believes that it is immediately necessary.

Hey.. it's Texas. Do you really think the bad guy gets away and the good guy goes to jail? All bets are off, though, if you're in Dallas, Harris or Travis county. You may have a big problem there.

Burglary, yes. Theft, no... they didnt enter a building or habitation in the example of stealing from the boat.
Hey, are you fishing Sandlin or Fork next weekend?

Hey, are you fishing Sandlin or Fork next weekend? I doubt it, I do not want anyone to steal all my stuff

I would never confront anyone stealing "stuf"f with deadly force. But there are those that think they have the right to and it is a gray area in the law. But, if you do shoot someone over "stuff" you'll likely end up in prison and/or broke from defending your actions.

How to prevent anyone from opening your boat compartments:
NEVER clean your boat, ever.

Hey, I've been ripped off, big time. My truck with a whole band's worth of musical gear got jacked. I know how it feels. It sucks, big time. But the next morning, I was still healthy and all that was missing was some material possessions. That's why, in the grand scheme of things, taking fishing poles or a fish finder is not a capital offense.
Think about how y'all would feel if your wild-hair teenage son, for a joke or a laugh even though knowing right from wrong,... maybe after a couple beers with his stupid friends that you never liked anyway... messed with someone's boat and got shot to death for his trouble.
Would you think "well, thieves have it coming to them. I hate thieves." Then you can explain it to your wife when she stops crying. Or would you feel otherwise?
Me, I have a Loc-R-Bar across my rod and gear hatches. Also enough e-Locks on my electronic equipment, Ram mounts, and trolling motor to be a stockholder in the company. And I put the cover on. And I try to park as close to the room as possible, or under a parking lot light if necessary. As many things as necessary that I can afford to make ripping me off as inconvenient as I can make it.
I'm not a "liberal," BTW. I just believe that sh!t happens to all of us, and the punishment should fit the crime.

Several years ago we put together an alarm that is basically a step up from the TH system. So with adjustable shock sensors we also arm each compartment. You can also travel down the road with the shock sensor turned off but all your compartments are armed.
Just an idea.
