A guard ain't quite the same as a properly functioning skeg. On a 250hp motor, you want a properly functioning skeg. Leave it at that. Get it repaired properly.

I have one on mine (no skeg damage) and it performs fine. I’d get it fixed too. The guard has saved me from having to get my skeg repaired though. Hit a stump at Pines on plane... just had to replace the SkegGuard.

Where did you hit a stump on plane at pines?

You cant weld cast aluminum without a significant amount of porosity in the weld. I broke my skeg off, had a new one welded on and it bent at the weld seam. I bit..ed enough and they welded another one. It will never be as strong as it was when it was cast. I'm currently looking to buy a used housing so when it breaks again, because its just a matter of time, i'll replace the whole gear housing. Insurance companies wont usually pay for a new gear housing so we are all basically screwed if you break your skeg off.

I would not recommend these guys for any prop or skeg work. Josh at Steves custom props is very good,

Well found out today they just welded in a patch piece into it. I am trying to figure out why my dealer is trying so save someone else's insurance money. I also found out that my insurance has taken care of the cost so far and their insurance hasn't done [censored]. So I believe the impact of the wreck bowed the skeg more that factory and when they patched the middle its off kilter. That is why it buffers over 60 mph

A dealer should never even consider repairing a skeg. A new case with your internals at a minimum. In addition, I would have your whole motor mounting assembly visually inspected for damage. I don't see that repaired skeg as causing the buffering you mention...like something else was damaged.
