I�m an avid bass fisherman but have never fished saltwater. We are heading down to Galveston next week and I thought about doing a little fishing maybe off the bank or jetties or piers. If I was to take a normal bass rig (baitcaster or spin cast) and some lures could I expect to have any chances at catching anything. If so what type of lure should I concentrate on and what type of places would i have the best chances. Thanks for any advice.

What are your top couple of colors on the assassin plastics?

I would find a pier with good lighting at night that is shining at the water... free line shrimp or use a rattling light bobber and have fun! The later the better! (Cooler too) you can also use glow in dark gulp baits. I�ve never fished on shore or pier in Galveston, only offshore. All my info comes from port a.. but I�m sure it works there to..?! Fish love shrimp! Your bass set up will work just fine.. I use 12pd big game for my baitcasters and free line with 20pd power pro braid on spinning.. hope this helps

Depending on where ya fish. If you fish off a pier bring a heavier setup.
No less than 30# mainline and leader. Adjust your lead weights according to the current.
Spider weights help if current is strong. That's for heavy gear.

Good news is you are bass fisherman, so that will serve you well. Patterns at the coast are more subtle but way less complicated when dialing in the fish. I would suggest you do inshore fishing, look for area accessible for wade fishing. Similar to bass fishing, spending a few bucks on a map should help you narrow down some spots you can wade. Not familiar with Galveston or I would give you some locations to wade.

-Popping cork with live shrimp is a tried and true combo, you can cover a lot of water with it. You can also attach Gulp shrimps if you want to avoid live bait. I prefer the Gulp Mantis Shrimp, new penny chartreuse. (you tube it)

-Top water early can be very effective. I use She Dogs in Bone/chrome, hot pink/chrome, chartreuse chrome. Super spook Jr, same colors.

-Saltwater Assassin, I like single tail style, rig them with a jig head, plum/Chartreuse is legendary, I like chicken on a chain as well.

-H20 Thumpin Mullet same colors as the Assassins.


Find the bait Look for jumping bait, even if it is huge bait. Look for slicks, look for birds sitting on the water, standing in the water, hunting near the waters edge, birds follow bait. You should as well.
