Never, it's like turn signals, a sign of weakness.

I don't mean to turn this thread the other way, cause I agree on re tying.. I'd be pissed to break off on that pig because of some frayed line..
However, about a year ago a buddy and I were fishing down in Port O' Connor.. All damn day, trout, redfish, dragging over shell reefs, never retied once. Toward the end of the day, my friend hooked into a big [censored] jack cravalle. Long story short, fought him for a little over an hour (we were using medium light trout rods and typical baitcasters. so it took a while.) Finally got him in.. That braid held up all day on all those trout and reds and shell, and still hauled in a jack no problem. 30lb test Fins Windtamer. Kept fishing after that and never did re tie. I was pretty amazed to say the least

After every fish. Or at least twice an hour on average. Kinda weird about it but it has paid off over the years. Especially if big fish or money are the goal.

Usually if I find a knick. Depends really on line size and cover I am fishing.

I retie anytime I feel a nick plus 1-2 extra times a day. You never know when a giant will bite. +1 or or after a fish or two. Doesn't have to be a nick for the line above your knot to be weakened by a big fish.

Too often my retie is "after" I've lost a fish due to not checking my line or retying recently... :-( during practice I rarely retie but in a tourney I will check the line after each fish especially if it wrapped me around something or I was in heavy cover. I agree with some of the above statements that "teeth" and "abrasions from cover" damage the line a lot more % than we think even if we can barely see it.

pretty often, but almost all the central texas lakes have zebra mussels which really tear up fishing line

Several times a day but it just depends on how my line feels. Sometimes I'll re-tie several casts in a row.
There's not a worse feeling that breaking one off and knowing you should have taken the time to re-tie
