At dinner tonight my wife and I were talking with our 9 year old third grader. She’s a straight A student and just brought home a letter designating her in the gifted and talented program again for next year. I only say that to illustrate she’s pretty sharp for her age. So at dinner I ask her if they discussed Memorial Day at school. I asked if they spent any time learning about it. Her response kind of took me by surprise and then, as a veteran, I was overwhelmed with disappointment. First it was funny then it was just disappointing. She said “No, but we learned about Cinco De Mayo”.

No excuse for that. I get it is the end of the year but that should be in the curriculum.

I think some teachers aren’t comfortable talking about death with children until they are older

That is Funny but sad... seems like the schools have certain things they want to teach these days. Maybe they save this holiday for the higher grades. and the ones they can have fun with for the lower grades.

When I was in third grave we were taught The Marine Corp Hymm. Some kids were saying corpse instead. The choir teacher patiently explained that a Marine corpse was absolutely not what we wanted. Everyone understood and we went to recess singing it correctly. Nobody was traumatized.
We need to go back to there.

Well we have a Memorial Day ceremony that celebrates past family members of our students. Our principal is pretty adamant about this ceremony. Every branch of the military is recognized and the band plays the song of each branch. There are so many families attending, our students have to sit on the gym floor because the bleachers are full.
