Be careful and watch what may be up above your head while kayaking.
I've seen plenty of harmless water snakes do this, but rattlers also hang out in trees to avoid the heat.

That's scary and extremely unfortunate.

I worked on the Nevada Nuclear Test site catching and Tagging snakes, lizards, rodents, bats etc. I have been face to face with rattlers, when rock climbing, hiking at least 100 or more times. I was Never bitten no one on the project was Ever bitten in over 10 years. I also worked in an ER where I was told the 1rst day and never saw anything to dispute this that MOST (over 90%)of snake bites occurred to men between the ages of 18-30, who bitten on the hand, were drinking and strangely enough had tattoos, most likely when they tried to catch or pick up the snake. Here is an article that supports what I saw and some of what I was told. Snakes venom is a protein, it takes a lot of energy to make and they don't want to waste it. They use it to hunt prey or when they feel cornered or trapped. My guess is they tried to catch it and were bitten, then in order to not sound so stupid they said it fell out of a tree onto the Kayak.

Water Moccasins climb trees in or by the water. When I was a kid, my Dad and I paddled under a willow tree and a cottonmouth dropped into our 12-foot mahogany rowboat. I grabbed the .22 rifle we had and was about to shoot it, when my Dad stopped me. He got the snake out with a paddle. The .22 was loaded with rat shot, so it probably wouldn't have made a very big hole in the boat. Funny memory. Keep an eye out(and up). IslandJim

" Well... It bit me." Wonder what he thought was going to happen? It's really unfortunate to say the least, and I feel bad for him; only because I know hes probably not feeling too great right now. But honestly, he kinda asked for it by grabbing the snake. Common sense says don't grab snakes. Especially a venomous one.

I didn't think so either until one October a few years back during archery season. I was helping a guy track his deer when he made a questionable hit.
It was dark and we only found about 2 drops of blood where the deer had originally stood, so we pushed on just looking for anything, and going into a thicket of cedars on a rocky hillside, one of the guys stooped down and went into the brush and we heard a loud yell and the guy came running out like he had run into a swarm of bees.
No bees, but it was a rattlesnake up in the cedar bush limbs about waist high, which in his case was eyeball to eyeball with the snake.
It was a pretty warm night and we called it after the scare, and with little to no sign, put the search off until the morning....Never found the deer.

While dove hunting I walked up on a rattler lying stretched out full length in the shade on top of some thick grass.
The snake never moved as I jumped back almost stepping on the snake because I was watching the trees for birds and looked down just at the last minute, so I assume it was asleep in the cool shade on top of the grass, since it was about 100+ that afternoon.
I know we have snake people here, so I'm not going to say what I did afterward, but I'll just say that 6' rattler won't ever bite anyone.

When I was a kid I was into all of that stuff, and I read a lot about snakes. The authorities at the time said that in approximately 1/3 of venomous snake bites, the victims were not envenomated. Recently one of my fishing buddies (a critter whisperer who works for TPWD) and I were discussing snake bites and he told me that most first strike envenomations come from young snakes. He says -- and he's usually right about critter facts -- that the older snakes will strike as a warning, holding back the venom. That's usually enough to repel humans. I'm quite sure it'd repel me.........

1. Why would you make up a story like that!?

2. Why would you try to pick up a rattle snake?

If it keeps getting warmer its only a matter of time before we start seeing burmese python in east Texas.
