Hey guys,

If you own a boat or trailer of any kind: have you repacked your bearings in the last year? I don't mean simply inserting the grease gun into the front part of the hub. I mean removing the hub and repacking the bearings properly from the inside.

Otherwise, it can lead to your whole wheel passing you on the road while your singe axle trailer drags the road, which could be catastrophic, for you and/or the people around you.

Please don't ask me how I know of this. ;-)

Thankfully, my situation was not catastrophic, just need a new axle and hub. But please do some preventative maintenance to avoid this yourself!

something that worked for me...each year I fished one sometimes two redman/bfl divisons plus several local trails, usually a several hundred mile trip to a regional plus a trip to Guerero..this resulted in me putting 15-20,000 miles on my trailer each year.....
I would have my bearings inspected and hand packed twice a year....fortunately we have a local tire store whose owner is also a tournament fisherman and he is very knowledgeable about trailers and tires....he recommended that I never add grease between packings because the grease you add is thinner and just ends up watering down the thick heavy duty grease that is used when hand packing bearings...I rarely fish tournys anymore so I've dropped to having my bearings checked/re-packed once a year and always have it done before I'm leaving for a long trip to Mexico or Falcon lake..
Obviously you would add grease if caught in a emergency situation where you had a leaking seal or similar situation and were just trying to limp home...

I'm also convinced that Murphy's law was written with boat trailers in mind....

just getting ready to do this.

May i ask what happened in your situation?

I had a catostrophic tread separation saturday morning on the way to the lake- why is it when these trailer tires go, they seem to do so in very dramatic fashion? it ripped out my tail light and the license plate is long gone.

. Tire dry rot. Looks good with deep tread up until the moment of bang.

It's my routine to do this every January.

I also carry two sets of extra bearings just in case in my truck.

Doesn't take long to do--about 45 minutes for a single axle/two wheel trailer.

Those cotter pins can wear out over time also (cheap replacements at Harbor Freight, ACE Hardware, and tractor supply)

been there. I had a hub break off and my wheel bounced past me going down the road! Worst part about it is that it was a single axel trailer! That axel was fubar.

Well I had just turned off of the main highway where I'd been running 65 mph. I was heading down the road leading to my neighborhood at about 25 mph. As a habit, I constantly check my mirrors whenever towing. I just happened to be looking in my driver's side mirror and literally watched the whole wheel wobble some, then detach, and go rocketing past me down the road. Simultaneously, that side of the axle/leaf spring dropped and dug into the asphalt with a loud scraping sound. It was indeed a single axle trailer!

In that split second, I simply could not process what was happening, but I hit the brakes and slowed as quickly as a I could. Meanwhile my tire is a hundred yards ahead of me rolling upright and fast down the road. Thankfully it loses momentum and goes off the side of the road before another car comes, but it ends up 250 yds down the road.

So there I am, unable to move, the entire hub is gone so there's nothing to attach a spare to. I'm only 1/2 mile from home but that really doesn't matter. I call a tow truck with a flat bed, they put it on there and take it to trailer repair shop. I'm getting a new axle, two new hubs, u bolts, not sure on leaf springs, and one new tire since the fender well sliced the one that detached.

This all happened yesterday and they are supposed to have it fixed today.

Thankfully, it didn't happen going 70 mph on a major highway, or the boat didn't flip or jack knife, etc. Nothing else was damaged except the tail light on that side which got crushed when that side dropped.

I thought I was doing the right thing by adding grease on the front each of the last 2 years. But hey, you don't know what you don't know.

I'll be getting my four RV axles done ASAP.

not sure on leaf springs

Leaf springs are cheap. At a minimum have the one that drug replaced. Otherwise you could be in the same boat (no pun intended) next time you hit a bump if you cracked that thing. Happened to me recently.
