May is one of my favorite months to be on the water. East Texas lakes are really showing out right now. The white bass populations have exploded with four consecutive years of great spawning conditions. The hybrid striper populations are in great shape as well with 4-5 years of uninterrupted stocking efforts from the state (I heard the brood fish collection this years was sub-par due to flooded river conditions below Livingston early April, but lets hope they figured something out) I had the pleasure of fishing three different lakes with great guide buddies Michael Richardson, Joe Moore, Jeff Friederich, and Jason Machala over the past three days with easy limits on all!

Lake Livingston: The white bass were late returning to the main lake this year but are now down in full force. Look for shallow surfacing early, with fish stacking up on 12-15 and 22-26 structure mid-day. Also, weve quietly been on a pretty decent striper bite. Im pretty sure we will see some June striper surfacing action this year!

Lake Conroe: We expanded our portfolio to cover brush pile crappie fishing this year. The one hour drive each way isnt very much fun but feeling the thump and putting 100 crappie in the cooler sure is. Brush 12-16 is loaded. Lake Conroe is a big time sleeper hybrid lake as well but we do most of it during the winter due to heavy boat traffic the rest of the year.

Richland Chambers: I had the pleasure of running a big group trip with Joe Moore (hooked up guide service) out of Fishermans Cove Lodge this weekend as well. Joe is one of the hardest working fishermen and one of the best guides I know. We enjoyed the group and put easy limits of hybrid onboard. The white bass population has made a HUGE recovery and can be found on just about any structure throughout the lake.

Cedar Creek: Cedar Creek Lake is fishing fantastic. It is great to see an evenly distributed hybrid population once again on Cedar Creek. There are lots of 12, 17-18, 21-22, and 23+ fish in lake right now. We are catching full boat limits on live bait within an hour or so! Catch and release evening lure trips after work are producing big pigs. White bass population seem to be healthy as well with lots of fish hanging on 20-26 structure.

I will be guiding primarily on Cedar Creek for the rest of the summer so give me a shout if you want in on the action. Ill guarantee a limit of hybrids on live bait trips through June! Michael is limiting every day on Livingston as well so give Lake Livingston Adventures a call if youre in the Houston area and want to fill the freezer.

Chris, Livingston is a lake that I have never fished but would like to.

Do you have any recommendations of boat friendly/clean place to stay on the West side of the lake?
Also, how is the bait catching on that lake?

Hey Holzer,

Haven't seen you since the TSA tourneys back in the day. Hope all is well.

We do most of our fishing form the East side of the lake but Wolf Creek Park (managed by TRA) is on the west side mid lake. I believe it has a fish cleaning station as well.
Bait catching is easy on Livingston. Lots of gizzards hang out on the shallow flats.

More of the same on Cedar Creek yesterday evening. Smashed them on crankbaits with the fam.

Ya, since I've moved to the San Antonio area I don't get to hang out with the boys anymore. Hopefully the TSA will form again or someone can put together a striped fish "club" of some sort.
I still travel up to the DFW every now and then to do some catching. There's not as much water down here.

Thanks for the tips.
