The last 3 nights of flounder gigging have been excellent, despite sustained winds over 20mph each night. Choppy/ rough water and bumpy boat rides coming and going from the flounder grounds have been the norm over the last few nights. Taking my time crossing the open bay, and going slow enough to let my 26' boat eat up the waves has been key to keeping my customers safe and dry lately. Water clarity has been good, but we are still finding more fish in areas with cloudy water. Tide levels have been on a slow rise over the past few nights along with a more Easterly component to the wind, making for a different pattern on each trip. Most of our flounder were found on hard sand and grass bottom, with only a few on soft mud. Fish size was excellent for early summer, with a 17" average, and plenty of solid fish in the 18-19" range each night. Flounder gigging should remain good for the remainder of Summer, with plenty of fish around, even during high wind conditions...
5/17/2018Lots of fun with the Jimmy G. family group of 4 onboard tonight, including his 8 year old son and 11 year old daughter. Conditions were poor, with South winds at 20mph and slightly low tide levels. The kids had a blast spotting and gigging flounder over hard sand and grass bottom in clear water, with most of the fish very easy to see. We ended with a 20 flounder limit plus 1 sheepshead by 11:20pm. I love having kids on the boat, showing them all the different fish swimming around and coaching them to gig their first ever flounder. These youngsters made memories tonight that will last a lifetime, and that's what its all about...
5/18/2018I had new customer Daniel M. group of 2 onboard tonight. Conditions were horrible, with SSE winds at 20-30mph and slightly low tide levels. We got on the fish fast tonight, with amazing quick action over hard sand and grass bottom. They gigged their 10 flounder limit in 40 minutes. After that, we went looking for sheepshead and black drum for 2 hours, making several moves, but not really finding any concentrations of fish. We ended with a 10 flounder limit plus 6 sheepshead by 11:15pm.
5/19/2018I had new client Pam W. group of 4 onboard tonight. Conditions were horrible, with SE winds at 20-30mph and normal tide levels. Water clarity was worse tonight, and finding fish meant covering lots of water looking for clear protected pockets. We ended with a 20 flounder limit plus 2 sheepshead by midnight. The fish were solid tonight, with many in the 18-19" range.
