Once it hits 15, I no longer care about going. Not fun when you lose control of the presentation.

I've made the decision to try and learn Joe Pool. moved to Texas in 2013.. and just have focused on that lake. When the wind is out of the South.. which it usually is, and its more than 10-15mph.. that lake fishes about a small as a pond. no real creeks to run up into to get out of it and the fishable water that gets any shield at all from the South wind usually has a couple of boats on it. I'll fish in higher winds out of the North.. with usually worse results as that means the cold front has gone through.. but the South is a real problem.

I love the Weather Underground app on my phone. It will show an overview of several days, or an hour by hour. Including wind and direction:

I bookmarked all the local lakes I go to so I can pull up their forecast right away.

It depends how bad I want to go fishin that day and also the direction of the wind. If its predicted to be more than 10 out of the north Im usually staying home. Also when it is out of the north you can usually bet that its gonna blow stronger than predicted. A strong south wind I am more willing to deal with it and find a way to get out there because I think the fish are more active. But Im no expert

It's not rocket science. I use one of the local TV station's app. In Dallas, I use Fox 4's WAPP. I have several others too, but that's the primary. Wind can be different all over the place. I use the app to get an idea if the wind is gaining or losing.

I do have an app that uses the Weather Underground stations all over the place, and it works great. I found that I don't need, or care, to be that precise.

15 MPH, sustained, is tops. Anything above that, and it's miserable. I'm out there, but I'm miserable. At 20 mph, loading my boat becomes a challenge, so I avoid it if possible.

That's for most Texas, shallow water lakes.

It's a totally different animal when you're on Texoma or Broken Bow. I grew up on Texoma. Wind is always a player; however, when you see the lake wind warning flags/beacons flashing, make sure you bilge pump is working, and your life jacket is handy. The main channel has claimed many a boat of the years, so stay in the coves. Broken Bow is similar. It's not nearly as big, but because it so flippin' deep, the swells can be deceiving.

Yeah, Pool seems to be a different animal to me. You get the wind blowing from one direction on one side of the lake so you go to the other expecting to find cover from some of the wind and it's blowing from a different direction over there. It already fishes small but the wind packs the people in a really small area. The throw in that all the wake boats want that calmer water and then they throw huge wakes at everyone else it can make for a frustrating day and take the joy out of it.

20 plus, count me out.

That said, how much wind i'll tolerate depends on how I'm planning to fish. If I know they are on a moving bait bite, I'll put up with a lot more wind. It's a whole lot easier to effectively fish a crankbait or a chatterbait in the wind than it is a weightless senko.

So I say as long as you can fish effectively, embrace the wind. Just make sure you know when to leave. I've left e'm biting many of times because the conditions just got unsafe.

+1

It depends on how badly I want to go fishing that day too. My fishing time is limited these days due to work & family so sometimes I will have a trip booked well in advance. If the wind is blowing that day so be it. I got all the stuff to allow me to fish in pretty much any wind.

Josh is right. My best day so far this spring was a day on March 23rd when the south wind blew 20-30 from 9am till 6pm.
