I went out to one of the local lakes to Fly fish for Bluegill this morning. I caught a bluegill and a huge bass came up and ate it. I got it to the kayak and it shook it's head and spit out the bluegill.

So I tied on a big bluegill colored fly I had tied and tried to catch it. I had caught a 9.5 inch / 0.70 lb. bluegill earlier that morning and put it on the stringer so I could weigh it for a lake record. I started fishing for the bass and all of a sudden my stringer went tight. I pulled it up and the bass had it in his mouth. Once again he spit it out just before I could grab him. I kept fishing and here he came again. I hurried up and pulled the bluegill out the water before he could grab it. This continued for about 30 to 45 minutes. I pulled it out of the water 4 times before he could get it. He actually got it in his mouth 2 more times as well. The wind was blowing so I was moving up and drifting past that point but every time I went by he tried to grab it. After trying a couple different flies I finally just left him in frustration.

Now that's one persistent Bass. At least I know where it lives and next time I go to that spot I'll have a huge bluegill fly of some sort if I can figure out the best way to tie one and still be able to cast it.

Good story. Thanks for sharing. I have the same problem with Snapping Turtles. Had to start using a fish basket to keep the fish and he would try to drag the whole basket away. Finally went to the truck and took the 22 Mag. out and ended it.

grin I haven't used conventional gear for over 1.5 years. Got tired of the all the twisting and knots, LOL

I guess big bass aren't too line shy if they will take a bait on a blue and white stringer grin

Another thing I'll never forget that doesn't involve actually catching a fish. Those are the memories that always stick with us.

Thanks for the comments.

That sounds like fun. I'm not a huge believer in line size/color/material matters. I was bass fishing this past weekend at Lake Arlington and we were catching crappie on bass jigs, baby brush hogs, speed craws and cranks with line up to 20lb. Not nearly as big as a stringer, but still.

watched 3 guys take a limit of bass out of Martin Creek and they were using a glass longneck coke bottle with white nylon trotline wrapped around it a hook you could have landed a shark on with about a 1 1/2 oz egg sinker below it , they would bait the hook with a small perch hold the coke bottle by the bottom and spin the hook and sinker like a lariat , could not believe how far they could throw it
after watching them pull one nice bass after the other out of that clear water I packed up my finesse baits and spinning reels spooled with 6 lb Fluorocarbon line and went home

IMO it speaks more to the effectiveness of live bait than it does line shyness. A live bluegill looks and moves like a live bluegill not matter what. It's when you are trying to convince a fish that something artificial is alive that how and what it is presented on matters.

It also demonstrates just how aggressive a hungry bass can be. And why it is so much fun to pursue them.
