I have only fished Lake Bastrop twice, even though it's only an hour from my home. The first time for bass and the second time for carp. Neither trip was very successful.

Today I decided to take the kayak out there and try for sunfish even though the reports and surveys I read weren't very encouraging. The lake is full of grass so I tied on a top water fly, a Llano bug. I started catching bluegill immediately and it was non stop all morning long. Most were only about 7 inches long but I did catch a couple over a half pound. I also caught 8 bass along the way. All of those under 2 pounds.

At one point I stopped in an area void of grass to try and catch carp cruising around. I threw out a rubber legged dragon and caught a big Rio.

I registered a 9.5 inch / 0.70 lb. Bluegill and a 9.75 inch / 0.80 lb. Rio for new Lake records.

The bluegill got a little beat up because a huge bass kept coming up and grabbing him on my stringer. He actually ate the bluegill 3 times and I pulled him out of the water before he could grab him 4 more times. I couldn't get the bass to take any flies. He was only interested in my Bluegill. It was the craziest thing I ever saw a bass do. He was a monster and each time I pulled him up he would shake his head and let go of the bluegill.

Both fish were released and swam away.

Awesome post and fish Jamie! Congratulations on your two new record fish. cheers

Side Note: I have heard that Lake Bastrop also has some nice Redear. hmmm Also as we talked about earlier, that would have been something else if that bass would have gotten your record Bluegill! bang I have lost several record fish over the years but I can honestly say that I never lost one to a bass or any other fish! hammer nuts hammer

Yellow,Red,Black, and Chartreuse have been the colors getting the best results for me. I have been using a small split shot which helps sink the fly a little faster. Getting good results getting the fly down faster. What weight fly rod were you using?

4 weight. I actually did that today for a while, added a small split shot in deeper water.

I can see Clayton doing that. No worries, I'll catch a 0.8 lb. green hybrid and set every record on the Navidad this year. That will fix him grin
