My center console has a Humminbird 998 at the center and an old B/W Lowrance on the trolling motor. I'm going to replace the front graph with probably a Helix 9 (I like having more than one preset) or an older model 7-10" and have 3 questions.

1) Is it worth the money to buy the G2N to get networking if you don't have an iPilot trolling motor? What do I really get if I networked my 998 to the new graph? I have my boat in a slip so I fish the same lake so waypoints are not that critical as I know most of the good spots already.

2) Is it worth the extra money to get new Helix vs finding another 99x or something similar from an older model Humminbird. I'm thinking this is a no brainer yes, but just want to check.

3) Do you use SI on the trolling motor much because you're changing the direction quite a bit when fishing? Or do you mainly use DI. I'm still learning SI on my other graph so I think this will become more valuable as I get better at it but as I'm constantly adjusting the direction on a trolling motor was wondering if SI is just too confusing up front.

thx for advice

1. Any Helix Ethernet capable unit will "talk" to either version of 998 you have.
The smallest unit would be the Helix 7 CHIRP G2N. Any Helix in the 9, 10, and 12 series. The Helix 7 has no pre-set view buttons.
Networking shares waypoints, sonar technologies, temp sensors, and Ethernet accessories. You cannot share any sonar with the 998 with CHIRP turned on.

2. The G2N models are the current ones. The units without G2N are discontinued. You would appreciate the much brighter display the Helix units have.
The Helix units would have an updateable lifetime, your 998 doesn't anymore.

3. Yes, I use SI at the bow with a SI transducer on the trolling motor. I don't use DI for fishing at all, just demo screen shots. Adjusted correctly there is no issue with distortion when fishing.

Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G3N and G4N, 1198c SI, SOLIX 10 SI G3,
Helix 8 MEGA SI+ GPS G4N, SOLIX 12 SI and G3, MEGA 360, MEGA LIVE TL, RC-1

I have a HB 798 sici combo at console and one at bow, ordered the Ethernet cable with two ends. Do I just run the cable from one unit to the other to get SI and DI at bow?

Thanks

are they both the 798 HD units? If not they will not network. If they are then you will need an Ethernet cable adapter for each. Yes, just connecting the Ethernet cable to each unit will allow you to network the units, just make sure they both are running the same software

They are the same units, I ran the cable now what steps do I take to set up both units so that they will show Side Imaging and Down Imaging?

Once everything is hooked up. Go to the main menu and scroll all the way to the right and you should find the network tab. Open it up and then you should be able to see both units communicating together. There you choose how you want your units to setup
