Started up river, fishing flat points in approximately 4 ft of water, near the creek channel bend. Moderately stained water color. Caught several bass flipping tight to cover on solid wood targets. Nothing really productive associated with fishing bushes. Made a transition mid day and began fishing docks in clear water. The best docks were not fully shaded but instead were partially shaded with a hint of sunlight. Fish were more in a roaming type of mood, relating toward the top of the water column, rather than being closely oriented with a specific cover element. Had a productive day implementing finesse techniques, as dock fish were spooky.

Docks in Canyon Lake? In Comal county? No docks allowed. Are you talking about the marina slips?

I've seen some good reports in the last few days on Canyon, there are some anglers on a good bite.

Neighbor just pulled a 17+ sack from Canyon over the weekend. Not an easy lake to fish most of the time, but some big smallmouth and decent largemouth in Canyon.

Grout-scout, you trying to be funny or just trying to keep attention away from the lake? They are definitely a few good bags in the last couple weeks.

Considering its been about 3 years since it filled up from a 7-year low state... you can guess...

A serious question to the OP, it was my understanding there was no fishing allowed at the marinas. Am I mistaken, or are you just never called on it? Thanks.

You can fish anywhere on the lake from a boat, including the slips at the marina. The marina does not allow fishing from the marina. Slip owners can fish from their boats in their slips, but not while standing on the marina. You cannot fish in your boat if you tie up to the marina. You can anchor close to the marina and fish, but your boat cannot touch the marina. Sunset security patrols and enforces the marina rules.

There are some quality bass in Canyon and yes the fishing can be tough but that makes it more rewarding when you do catch some good fish. Good job on figuring out a pattern to catch a few.

That's good info, thanks. Not sure if it's still there or if it's even enforceable but that sail boat marina at ramp 12 use to have a no fishing sign outside of it. The rest don't though.

I was told you have to stay a minimum of 200 ft from the marinas for the military, unless you have a military ID. I believe there are two such marinas like that on canyon. They ran me off last time I was there...with a "warning"...

Should have clarified my post by saying I'm talking about the two public commercial marinas ie Cranes Mill And Canyon Lake Marina. Can't comment on any of the others but the military marina being off limits to civilians is very believable.

It has been maybe 20-years ago. I was fishing, from a boat, around the Crane Mill Marina and one of their security guards walked up to us and said we could not fish there. I told him it was Corp Lake and all of the lake was open to the public. He said they gave them the authority to keep fishing boats out of the area between the bank and the the boat slips, account of theft. I told him I was not going anywhere and he could call the game warden so we could straighten this out. That was the end of it. Two years ago I fished at night at the same Marina with no problems. I am going this Thur. night, hopefully without any problems.

I fish there a lot (Cranes Mill) and promise you will have no problem as long as you don't tie up to the marina. The guards I have encountered lately have been pretty nice. The guard you encountered was just running a bluff. You called it and won the hand.

I had an ace in the hole, I had a slip and was a member of the Marina. Well I fished from 8:30pm to 12:00am, with 2-green lights. I was right next to the fueling dock in 32-feet of water. No crappie, which I was hoping to catch. There were a lot of white bass, but they would not hit any lures. They were keying on big schools of very tiny minnows and swimming through them with their mouth opened. I think if you had some small minnows you could catch them. I had my minnow net, but no glass minnows or shad showed up. I have been doing this a long time and none of my favorite very small lures worked (well I did catch 2). I know next to nothing about crappie, maybe at this time of year, I should have have been fishing shallow in the trees.

Man I almost feel like if you had a super light wire a rig or a spinner bait with small blades and a translucent skirt, that might be the key. The a rig you might be able to get away with if there's at least a little bit of a chop on the water. It's kinda too gaudy to be throwing in calm clear conditions. Interesting though.
