I m trying to decide if I really need Spot Lock on trolling motor before I buy so can someone explain how this works. Do you have to position the boat against the wind for it work? What about cross wind? Will the motor automatically goes forward and reverse to stay lock to a position. Thanks

The motor has a GPS receiver built in , You hit spot lock and the motor will stay on that spot , regardless of wind , current , what ever. The boat will end up nose to the wind and hold that position.
Motorguides hold tight,( 1st hand ). older MinKota's wander a bit , newer Minkota hold tight ( From what I have been told ) good luck

I have an older model Riptide 101
The anchor lock / spot lock works just as Mo laid out.
If you're wanting to anchor, it's hard to go back to the rope. But don't throw that anchor and rope out. You still may find yourself in need of it from time to time.

Well how much do you really "need" anything, right??
I have the newer model Terrova which has the updated spot lock and like it. For it to work best, you do have to point it in to the wind, let off of it for a few seconds, let it push you backwards, and then hit the spot lock. Once it's locked in, it shouldn't have to go forward/backward... it just makes small corrections

If you are undecided, don't ever try one. You'll have to find some money.
I put one on my Skeeter, now I want one on the other two boats also.
Heck, it's just money.
Seriously, this is my first year with mine. I wouldn't want to be without one.

i had one on my last bass boat... best thing ever!!!!
you don't really need it... until you need it!! worth the investment.
break off a bait.. hit the spot lock.. re tie and the boat is still right there... windy points?? no problem.. go fishing and let the troller do the work for you. it's really the best investment you can buy.. imho.
