Offshore fishermen in the Virgin Islands would sometimes do that. Some would also put bottom paint on some prop blades and leave some unpainted to try to attract fish. If it works in your mind, it's working.

cut out a stencil in cardboard or poster board, tape to boat bottom, use small roller and paint over stencil.
You can watch first 3 mins of vid and get it.
