Between minn Kota, and motor guide which has the best wireless system? Functionality? Can these replace a power pole? Looking for pros and cons... trying to decided which direction to go. Thanks in advance for any input! ~JUSTIN

There really isn't a comparison. Minn Kota wins hands down. Only MK has an LED screen that provides feedback and let's you know what the trolling motor is doing. That alone is valuable.
I use both a PowerPole and the trolling motor. When in very shallow water, I prefer not to burn up the battery when I can sit on the pole.

I have a minnKota, Not impressed. Tangles itself in its poorly designed cabling, the remote has a lot of trouble staying powered and you constantly need to use the "minn Kota slap" to get it to come back to life. It usually saves these off line times for just when you really need the thing to respond. The other problem is they chose an odd battery for the remote. Battery specialty store or on line about only place to get it.
I give it a D+. Pretty darn good senior engineering project but next time they need to contract out side and get someone who actually knows what they are doing to design the next one.

I have nothing but kudos to deliver on my 2017 Terrova iPilot trolling motor. For me it has be a paradigm shift for my fishing equivalent in potency to when I got side scan/downscan sonar. I don't even carry an anchor in my boat any more. I don't have a Talon or PowerPole but I confidently feel that a GPS/wireless trolling motor would be MUCH more versatile than these items. I would certainly get the GPS/wireless troller FIRST. Example -- Last week I found a mix of white and black bass tight on a steep break coming off of a 30 foot shelf dropping fairly sharply down to about 45 feet. All I had to do is creep up over this spot and hit the Spot Lock function. Then the fun began. I started lowering baits right onto their kitchen table. We had all we wanted to clean in 45 minutes. It would have been almost impossible to fish that spot effectively with anything other than a GPS controlled trolling motor. It kept us hovering right over those fish. Here's a screen shot I took while over this spot --

The Gen 2 I have now, the remote takes AAA batteries,..yes the older one takes oversize camera batteries, the expensive ones. The ones you can never find..

If you want to link the trolling motor to your electronics then its MotorGuide/Lowrance or MinnKota/Hummingbird.

Good to know Jim. Perhaps I need to see if I can sell my older unit and get a new one.

MK, is my preference. The remote is far better, and they make more power. I know that sounds strange, but I have had both, and there is a noticeable difference. The new MK will hold tighter, that's about the only difference in performance I can tell. A tip for the remotes with the CR2450 Battery- Take a thin knife and bend the little tabs toward the center a little for a tighter fit. Also, a piece of a folded business card under the lid will help a lot. Also know that all CR2450 batteries are not created equal. There are a few brands out there that the rim is a different size than the ones that the factory sends. This causes an even looser fit compounding a problem. One battery lasts a long time, I bought a four pack of them on Amazon at $8.99 two years ago, and still have some left.

You can just walk into Walgreens to buy the battery. I only replaced it once in 2 years just because I wanted to be safe. The MK has a corded foot control when you want it. The other is wireless and uses batteries. They are both about equal on accuracy now. I have heard a few haing issues with water getting into the head unit causing issues when they stow it on the motorguide. They are so energy efficient that for me battery usage has never been an issue. I don't feel the need for power poles myself.
If you want to link to your fish finders, buy the appropriate unit to match your FF but you'll need to make sure the TM is capable of linking. If you want to use the foot pedal, the only real choice is the Ultrex as it is cable steer. The others foot control has no feedback. I don't think that you can go wrong with either one. Just make sure if it is the MK that you buy the new bluetooth model. the older model isn't as accurate.

If you are mounting one or if you already have one of these electric steer trolling motors and have issues of it hitting your roller when launching or damaging it when pulling up to a doc, please take a look at the LiftSaver Trolling Motor Mount. It also helps to distribute the mounting forces over a greater surface area on your bow, covers up the existing holes, allows you to use any existing holes and also allows you to cant the mount so the control head is within the side of your boat. Works with the MG Xi5 and MK Terrova, Ulterra, Riptide and PD V2. www.liftsavertmmonunt.com
