Well, I tried overnight jugging last night, 8 fow. Came back late in the afternoon and all I found, was every bait cleaned off and no fish. A few of the jugs had done some traveling, but not too much. I had baited the hooks with cut shad and cut perch.
I think I'm being careful not to stuff the hook (5/0, fine wire circle hooks). There are a lot of videos out there, so hooking the bait is well described.
I'm in a reasonable area. A neighboring jugger pulled some nice cats up to 30 lbs, the day before.
Is getting so thoroughly cleaned-off pretty common?
Are there any favorite hooks and hook sizes I ought to prefer, for overnight jugging? I'd guess that the same hooks would be useful on trotlines too.
Thanks

I use 6/0 and 7/0 gamakatsu circle hooks on my jugs. I find some hooks cleaned off time to time and write those off to turtles. I stay close to my jugs and check em every hour or so also. I'd be willing to bet either turtles or someone else ran your jugs for you.

We use kale or circle hooks and keep them in 12-15 FOW

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

looks like I'll include some bigger hooks and see what happens. That and not leave the completely alone for so long. Thanks for the ideas. I'll get back after I can get on the water again (business trip coming up).
