I have a couple on a DFW area lake in the 18-20 foot in prime locations that produce regularly, I’m curious, do I need to try other depths as well? My goal is to have multiple piles for all seasons of the year. Let’s hear some expert opinions from the crappie experts. Thanks for any info.!

For winter time crappie, you will want some in deeper water. Along the edge of the river channel if there is a channel. BTW I ain't no expert.

No expert here but it does depend greatly on the individual lake as each lake fishes differently. On some lakes, 10-20ft will produce all summer long and on other lakes 20-30ft will produce and anything less than 20ft wont. IMO, if you are only fishing brushpiles for crappie year round, then you are missing the best fishing at certain times of the year. Brush piles tend to hold good numbers of good fish from roughly May-November. From December-April, while brush may still hold a few, it is not the best locations as this is when the creeks and deep open water get good (Winter) and shallow timber, stumps and rocks are good (spring).

10-15ft in the dead of summer, near a river channel I"ll go with this answer. May not work everywhere but it has served me well.

Variables for individual lakes make up where and at what depth the fish will be in the summer.
Lake Conroe for example (where I fish) the dissolved oxygen level drops off below 15 feet in the summer to the point that nothing can live there for long. However, the top 12 feet of water is too warm. It stays above 80 degrees in the heat of the summer. So, the magical depth is 12 - 15 feet of water. Any shallower and the water is too hot. Any deeper and the dissolved oxygen levels are too low.

For a lake like toledo bend, are you suggesting putting tops around the sabine river channel in water that is around 50-60 ft deep? I would like to start putting out some later on also.

this is how i would approach putting brush on any lake...the depth will very..but the concept will be the same...temp and oxygen

The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?

Did I see where someone inadvertently mentioned the Thermocline? Regardless of depth?
Ran across a guy that brushed out his boat dock...at around 5 feet, then pot out BPs all the way to the main river channel in 3-5 ft depth intervals (straight from his dock)...if you happened to be fishing those piles, he would come out and ask where the crappie were bunched up...he never really cared where they were, he just wanted to know how far out to go when he started fishing...as he had attractors at every depth!...the lesson here...cover all your bases, and it doesn’t much matter...
