Figuring out I was wrong on fokes not liking catching cats in Texas but I want one specific type, flat heads. What we used where I grew up (southeast indiana) was live gold fish or bluegill. It seems to be a preference here also but I can't seem to find a good public area to catch any flats let alone big. I live in the ft worth area so I'm clueless. I've tried benbrook lake in a couple spots and the trinity river also in a few spots and just fed turtles and gar. Any suggestions on locations and bait for bank fishing?

Any lake around here has flatties, so just keep trying, April-june are prime time. Rocky areas or areas with a lot of timber or logs with a creek channel or a lot of bank contour nearby are best. As far as bait goes, flatheads are fairly picky, and want it lively and fresh, bait that comes from the lake or a creek that flows in to the lake will also increase your chances because they tend to like stuff that comes from the water body youre fishing. Location is important with flatheads, but bait is probably more important, like I said, lively, fresh, hearty baits. Bullheads, suckers, carp, sunfish of all varieties, drum, buffalo, giant shiners are all good options, dont be afraid to throw a big bait, Ive seen 20 flatties caught on 7 long bluegill.

I would offer advice but I'm clueless about flatheads. I've never caught a single one, not even by random chance. I use live bluegill all the time for blues so I'm kind of surprised ive never gotten one. Oh well.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for all the good info that is sure to come.

Thanks a lot. I've only seen one location with a rocky bottom in Benbrook lake so may go back and try there as it warms up.

Lake Lewisville isn't too far away and it's an excellent catfish lake.
