If you are going to marinate it in koolaid and garlic powder like I do, you can go straight to chicken gizzards/hearts which are the cheapest of all. They are tough like shoe leather, one can catch multiple decent eaters (add some Dead Red after the first go-round) on a single piece.

Sometimes when one finally expires I will have to cut it off the hook because I can't pull the barb back through.

This is the only bait I've found that in some cases frustrates the turtles. I've had mono leaders all crimped up from their attempts at stealing the bait, and it's still on the hook.

Anything that will frustrate a turtle sounds worth a try. Maybe it will even work on bullheads.

Ran some jugs on the leeward side of a point this AM and early afternoon, 6-8 FOW. It was just too rough to make it fun further out on the main lake body.

Score two for marinated chicken breast, 3-4 pound eater and a larger blue of 7-8 pounds. There was some evidence of turtles munching on the chicken gizzards and Bar-S hot dogs, nothing hit a large chunk of cut shad. Just when I'm ready to completely abandon chicken breast for gizzards, I get a day like today. crazy

We use chicken ( both breast and dark meat ) all the time, and normally do pretty well with it.
May want to try to add some Anice Oil to it...
Good Luck!

I was skeptical but cut some breast into chunks and marinated over night in dead red. Caught 15 in 24 hours on 8 hooks. This was in January in about 25 foot of water. Went from 2-25 lbs.

As might be guessed from other posts, I do pretty well with chicken for catfish. What I'm really curious about is how does it stack up against cut shad when you're actively searching for/locating fish with sonar.

Since I've been fishing from the bank or just semi-randomly with jugs up until now, the marinated chicken seems like it gets action faster than the cut shad. Maybe because the scent is stronger and able to attract fish more quickly?

I'm looking forward to getting the boat tricked out and then doing a true A/B test where I know fish are located. Both baits in the water and see which performs best over time.

I think some days they are just more interested in certain baits and others a different bait. I normally don't focus too much on the bait, I think its more important to focus on finding the fish. Sometimes it doesn't matter what you throw out there, they'll eat all of it.

With that said, I do prefer cut carp or blue (live or cut). My laziness does factor in as well, its so much easier to go buy a few boxes of worms or a cheap pack of breasts vs throwing a cast net. I really need to spend a day at the lake just catching as many bluegill as I can and freeze them for easy bait.

Is there a limit in size or quantity for sunfish? I probably need to do this too.

It's an attractant spray sold by Team Catfish. Maybe it helps, maybe it doesn't. I think the most important thing is getting the bait in front of them.

NO limit on size or quantity on sunfish in Texas and legal for bait.

+1 for Anise oil. Soak some chicken breast (I've no experience with dark meat) in that and some of the minced garlic in a bottle you can get from the grocery store and its killer. They usually hit that over shad or perch...

Not everyone. I refuse to use good eating chicken meat just for cats when gizzards will work just as well and 1/10 the cost.
