When I don't have nothing to do, I like to get on Google Maps and just find some random lakes I didn't know about.. What's the deal with this place??? Lake is just about bone dry.. Don't think I've seen a lake this bad

Kemp is usually the first lake in the watershed to get smacked with golden algae. Because of the lakes high natural salinity, it was a darn good striper lake in the 80's and 90's until the algae hit it. Killed practically all of the fish and about the time it would recover, here's another outbreak. It is close to the Dundee Hatchery and I heard (hearsay, no verification) that if they had fingerlings left over, they'd put them in Kemp. It has some 6-10 lb stripers in it now if you can find them and yes, the catfish are back. Don't know about largemouth. As far as fishing there, there are almost no facilities, no bathrooms, etc. There is a decent boat ramp on the Moonshine entrance. The Waggoner Ranch had a longstanding sweetheart deal with the State controlling access to Kemp and it costs you an arm & leg to get in...and it's getting worse with the new owners.

I'm not at all new to bass fishing, and I've heard about this golden algae stuff for years.. I know it's not good obviously, but what starts it and is there something TPWD can put in the water to kill it..?

its an algae that grows in the colder winter months when the water clears up. Sticks to fishes gills and basically suffocated them. Seems to grow it the West/north Texas lakes that are clear and have a high salinity aka Brazos River basin lakes. I dont know much about it but I know they (toed) tried a bunch of things that didnt work back when pk bloomed in 2002. Smallmouth and spotted bass seemed to get hit harder than their largemouth cousins
Thanking the lord for another day on the water
